Nothing right about these voter cards

Numerous discrepancies in electronic voters identity cards (EVICs) have surfaced. A number of voters are complaining about errors in the cards they received from the election department.

Poll: Nomination process from April 17
Ludhiana, March 12
The DC-cum-district election officer, Vikas Garg, today said that candidates for the Ludhiana parliamentary seat could file the nomination papers between April 17 and April 24. The papers would be scrutinised on April 25 at the DC’s office and the last date for the withdrawal of the nomination was April 27.

Ishmeet music academy caught in red tape

After the singing sensation and Voice of India star, Ishmeet Singh, died in the Maldives in 2008 in a freak accident, a number of political leaders like Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal had made tall promises to raise memorials after the singer, including a music academy, in the name of the singer.

Goods worth crores destroyed in fire 
A factory that was gutted in Ludhiana on Thursday.Ludhiana, March 12
Machinery, building and unfinished yarn worth crores of rupees was reduced to ashes when a blanket manufacturing unit at Bajra village caught fire in the wee hours of today. A watchman of the factory saw thick smoke billowing out of the unit. Soon, a team from the fire department rushed to the spot.

Where are the ambulances?

The poor condition of ambulances in civil hospitals, primary health centres (PHCs) and community health centres (CHCs) in the district reflects the indifferent attitude of the department of health and family welfare.

Man gets life term for double murder
Ludhiana, March 12
The court of the Sessions Judge has sentenced Ravi Kumar (26) of Mata Bhag Kaur Colony, Gobindgarh village, to undergo rigorous life imprisonment in a double murder case. He was facing charges of killing his elder brother Ram Sarup and his wife Kiran Bala with spade and hammer.

The body of a woman was found from an iron chest in the Kitchlu Nagar area yesterday, creating panic and sending the police in a tizzy. When the chest was spotted near Jain Temple, residents informed the police.

PU panel for senate poll reforms

Yet another 13-member committee has been constituted by the Panjab University, Chandigarh, to make reforms in the senate elections of the graduate constituency. Such committees have been formed in the past also, following complaints lodged by people from various walks of life, but without any outcome.

Class V Exams
Exam centres allowed in affiliated schools

The education department, Punjab, has relaxed the norms and permitted the District Education Officers (DEOs) to set up centres to conduct Class V examinations to be  begin on March 16 in schools affiliated with the Punjab School Education Board.

People shun hostility, Holi celebrated with fervour
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 12
Members of all communities in this part of the Malwa celebrated the Holi with fervour yesterday. Enthusiastic youths equipped with modern gadgetry for playing Holi made everybody, they came in contact with, applied colours on one and all. They didn’t even spare the police personnel.

Alternative medicines camp from March 20
Ludhiana, March 12
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s department Ayush will organise “Arogya-2009”, a four-day camp wherein physicians from the Indian alternative system of medicines like Ayurveda and homeopathy will examine patients from March 20 to March 24 at SCD Government College, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), New Delhi. Principal Secretary (Health) AR Talwar said: "The Central government has sanctioned Rs 35 lakh and the state government Rs 15 lakh for organising the programme.  Additional income will be generated from the stalls selling Ayurvedic, Unani, Siddha, Yoga products, medicinal plants, food supplements and books.”  —TNS
