Chandigarh: Dr NTR University of Health Sciences (NTR-UHS), Vijaywada, has awarded Prof KK Talwar, director, PGIMER an honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) degree in recognition of his work in the field of cardiology at the 13th annual convocation.

Two killed in road accident
:Two persons, Asa Ram (52) and his nephew Tejinder Singh, of Gorakhpur village were killed on the spot and Rajinder Kumar of Ajit Nagar, Jalandhar, was injured in a road accident on Chandigarh Road here last evening. The deceased were travelling on their scooter and Rajinder Kumar was in his car when a truck coming from the opposite direction collided with them. The police has arrested truck driver Rajinder Singh of Dek Wala village in Ropar district.

Theft at Basant Avenue
:Thieves decamped with gold jewellery, electronics appliances and taps worth about Rs 10 lakh from two houses situated at Basant Avenue.



: Indo Global College of Education, Abhipur, organised a one-day seminar on “Making special education inclusive: Aligning disabilities with learning, teaching and diagnostic assessment” here today. The chief guest was Dr Raj Bahadur, director principal, GMCH-32, and keynote speaker was Dr Raj Gupta, chairperson, the department of education, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Graduation day: Annual presentation-cum-graduation day was observed at Gian Jyoti Global School, Phase 2, Mohali. The purpose of the event was the result declaration and graduation to next class along with the annual presentation of the events and activities, which tiny tots performed at regular intervals during the entire session. These activities were designed to make the students jump out of the stage fright.



Lady doctor manhandled
: Two youth allegedly misbehaved with a lady doctor, who had come to a local park for an evening walk. Three cops who were on duty outside the park, however, refused to act against two eve teasers till she made a written complaint in a police station. They not only allowed the youths to escape, but were also argumentative with the woman. The doctor has now approached the Superintendent of Police for taking action against the erring cops. The SP confirmed having received a complaint and said the SHO has been directed to inquire the matter and added that suitable action would be taken after the report was submitted.

Two die in mishaps
: A two-wheeler was hit by a car near Mund village on Saturday resulting in the death of the motorcyclist. A case has been registered against Yashpal, driver of the car, at the Assandh police station. In another incident, Ram Krishan, who was hit by an unidentified vehicle near Hospital Chowk in the city, died on Friday at Girdhar Hospital where he was undergoing treatment. A case been registered.

Death mystery deepens: Mystery shrouding death of an unidentified person, whose body was recovered from fields near Anaj Mandi on March 11, deepened on Saturday following the post-mortem report that revealed that the victim died due to strangulation. Satish, a resident of Bajisa Rodan village, had informed the police that an unidentified body was lying in his fields. After the post-mortem report, the police has registered a case of murder against unknown persons.

Remand for rape accused
: The Bawal police has arrested a man, Karam Veer, for allegedly raping a teenaged girl (19) at Mangleshwar village, near Bawal, on Monday. He has been sent to a 14-day judicial custody. In another case, Sachin Yadav, who had allegedly raped a teenaged girl (14) at Ahmedpur Partal village on Thursday, has also been arrested by the Kosli police. He was also sent to a 14-day judicial custody.



Chaitra festival
: A month-long Chaitra month festival began on Saturday at the Baba Balak Nath Temple, Deoth-Sidh. Hamirpur DC Abhishek Jain inaugurated the festival by installing a flag in the temple complex. A large number of devotees thronged the temple on the first day of the festival. The district police has also made arrangements for providing security during the festival and metal detectors have been installed in addition to deployment of security personnel in the temple complex.

Workshop begins: A two-day workshop on Power Transformers Design and Monitoring began on Saturday at the NIT, Hamirpur. It is organised by the Electrical Engineering Department of the institute and Prof RL Sharma, director, NIT, inaugurated it. He talked about the importance of this subject and said it had great relevance in Himachal, which had a vast potential for hydel power generation. Several participants also presented their papers on the subject. Chairman of the department Dr RN Sharma talked about the achievements of the department.

2 killed in mishap
: Two engineers died in a road accident on Saturday, near Larji, in Sainj valley, about 40 km from here. The mishap took palace as Bolero (JK-14A-3207) in which they were travelling rolled down into the Sainj river. Police sources confirmed that the victims were working with Sendibic Company in the Parbati Hydro Electricity Project. The vehicle was on its way to Bihali from Larji. The bodies were fished out from the river and sent for a post-mortem examination. They have been identified as Vishnu Rao (22) from Kerala and Manish Sharma (33) from Jammu.

Liquor vend looted
: The police has booked Atul of Thangar and Gobind of Bharmolli village for allegedly looting and setting a liquor vend on fire at Ganoh village, near here, on Friday night. According to the police, the accused allegedly had taken liquor from the vend three days back without paying and again came on Friday evening and demanded liquor which led to an altercation between them and vend owner Jagdev Singh. They left the spot with a warning to burn the liquor vend. According to police, they allegedly looted the vend in the night and set it on fire. The accused were arrested from a field at Matholli village.



Birth anniversary
: The Mahajan Sabha Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, would organise a function to celebrate the 119 birth anniversary of Chief Justice Mehar Chand Mahajan here on Sunday. Mahajan was the first Prime Minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and was later appointed as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Free medical camps: The BSF on Saturday organised three medical camps in the far-off areas of Jammu division. The camps were held in Ramsu, Nai Basti Gulabgarh and Bandradi village, where the doctors treated the patients from the far-off villages came for their medical checkup. A large number of men, women and children got benefited from these camps. The BSF also distributed free medicines.

Two hurt in mishap
: Two persons were injured in a road accident while three structures were gutted in the valley on Friday night, official sources said on Saturday. They said two passengers were injured when a vehicle in which they were travelling turned turtle at Bulgam on the Srinagar-Baramulla road. The injured were admitted to hospital. In another incident, three structures, including a hall, were gutted in a devastating fire at Khodpora Karnah, sources added. The cause of fire was not known.
