With snatchers on prowl, self-defence your best bet

Kanika Khanna At the time when police has failed to curb the growing number of snatchings in the posh localities, self-defence is becoming the order of the day. In a recent incident, a woman living in the Sham Singh Road near the Mall Road thrashed the snatchers with her sandals, when they tried to snatch her purse.

Auto driver alleges torture, cops deny
Ludhiana, March 19
A 25-year-old autorickshaw driver of the local Tajpur Road has alleged third degree police torture by the CIA-II wing of the police. Sonu Verma, the alleged victim, who used to drive a hired auto rickshaw, was brutally beaten up by CIA-II in charge Dilpreet Singh after the auto rickshaw was stolen. He sustained serious injuries on his legs.

Cultivators stage dharna

Hundreds of cultivators in the Bet area of the district staged dharna in front of Mini Secretariat here today. They were demanding ownership rights of land under their possession and on the spot mutations in the revenue record.

Farmers throng kisan mela
Ludhiana, March 19
Thousands of farmers from various districts of Punjab and nearby states thronged the two-day kisan mela, which was inaugurated by agricultural economist and former chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Cost and Prices Dr S.S. Johal at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here today.

US doctors, nurses special visitors

The Punjab EDUSAT society has started coaching classes for students aspiring to appear in the AIEEE, CET, PMT and IIT entrance examinations for 2009 under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, wing of the Punjab education department. Meter shortage delays power connections

A dental officer in the local civil hospital has been accused of misbehaviour, thrashing colleagues, staff and patients for the past about two years.
