at hospital

Health dept goes on overdrive

Sanjay Kumar (35), who ate adulterated gol gappas yesterday, died at the CMCH today due to renal failure. He was one of the six patients undergoing treatment for food poisoning. Ramu and Vicky Kumar had died of food poisoning yesterday.

Plastic Bags
Govt hospitals continue to violate Act
Ludhiana, April 23
In blatant violation of a ban imposed by the Environment Ministry and the Punjab Plastic Carry Bags Control Act on the manufacturing of carry bags less than 8x12 inches in size and 20 microns in width, plastic bags of non-permissible width are being manufactured and used in Punjab.

The police yesterday arrested a proclaimed offender with a revolver and five cartridges. The accused, Inderjit Singh of Hissowal village, near here, was arrested from the outskirts of the village.

The name of the dreaded criminal, Rajiv Raja, arrested for the gruesome killing of city jewellers in 2005, is once again on top of the police search list in connection with the recent robbery at a jewellery shop in Jalandhar where the accused decamped with jewellery and cash worth Rs 14 lakh.

Slow lifting of wheat; arhtiyas unhappy
Amloh, April 23
Commission agents of the local grain market are sore over the slow pace of lifting the wheat stock by the FCI. The grain market is flooded with 1.5 lakh gunny bags of the wheat for the past five days. The reason behind the slow lifting was inadequate labour and small fleet of trucks. Arhtiya’s Association Chief Jiwan Kumar Puri stated this today.

A large number of Congress workers along with councillors came out in support of Jathedar Sukhdev Singh Libra, who filed his nomination papers today. Sukhjit Singh Hara, secretary, Punjab Pardesh Congress Committee, who led the convoy of supporters from Sahnewal to Fatehgarh Sahib said they would support Libra due to his mass appeal.

20 mobiles stolen as students take exam

Tension prevailed at DD Jain College for Women, as angered parents and relatives went on a rampage against the college authorities after around 20 students alleged that their mobile phones were stolen while they were taking their examination here today. The incident took place this morning when around 20 out of the 170 private candidates who appeared for BA I and BA III sociology and Sanskrit examination complained that their mobile phones were stolen.

Parents protest outside KVM school
Ludhiana, April 23
Parents of the students studying in CBSE affiliated schools held a rally today in front of Kundan Vidya Mandir School to protest against the fee hike seeking implementation of the report of the Additional Deputy Commissioner. The parents led by Praveen Dang, president Hindu Sikh Jagriti Sena, organised a scooter rally and blocked the traffic in front of the school.

500 gram opium seized, man held
Raikot, April 23
The Jalaldiwal police has arrested a man and seized about half-a-kg of opium from his possession. Cops had on Tuesday barricaded a bridge on the drain at Dadahoor village. A man identified as Jagroop Singh (48) of Daudhar village, who now resides at Santokh Nagar, was going on his motorcycle (PB 56 A 9350) signaled to stop. Jagroop on seeing the police tried to escape but was nabbed after a brief chase. On being searched half-a-kg opium was seized. The contraband was concealed in his bag.
