Dengue rears head in city
2 positive cases reported in hospital
Ludhiana, April 29
Dengue revisited the region with two confirmed cases, one each from Ludhiana and Jalandhar, reported at SPS Apollo Hospital today. The cases have caught the health department and the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation unawares as a majority of the staff are busy with election duties.

Fire safety norms only on paper

Months of May and June keep firefighters on their toes and recent accidents have proved the officials right. The city has a number of schools, hospitals and offices, which are being run from dingy rooms and narrow streets with just a single door for exit.

Rs 75-lakh plot grabbed
Ludhiana, April 29
A few persons have illegally occupied a piece of residential land in Dugri, Phase I, which was developed by the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA). They have erected a makeshift structure under the garb of a “pir ki marhi.” Officials, it seems, are unaware of the land grab.

Court denies bail to independent nominee

Hopes of murder accused Ravinder Sabharwal, (ex-councillor, Jagraon Municipal Committee), to come out of jail for canvassing as an independent candidate in the coming parliamentary elections, dashed to ground, when a city court refused to release him on interim bail till polling.

Jageer Kaur and Sohan Lal had never thought that instead of witnessing wedding bells of their 21-year-old son, they would see Tarsem on a pyre. He was there with them on Sunday and this morning around 8 am, they were told that their son Tarsem was no more.

The sexual harassment case at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) here seems not to be reaching any conclusion even after seven months of a written complaint filed by a woman employee.

Security beefed up at PAU

Security has been tightened on the PAU campus to check the entry of unwanted elements. The step has been taken by Vice- Chancellor Dr Manjit Singh Kang following recent incidents of a clash in the veterinary hostel and a brawl in another hostel.

Free ambulance service for schools

Having taken the initiative of distributing nebulisers in city schools, SPS Apollo Hospitals has taken a step further by starting free emergency ambulance services. This has been done, especially for children suffering from asthma, so that incidents like the recent death of a girl in Delhi after an asthmatic attack can be avoided.

Mortuary at Civil Hospital ailing

Showing little respect for the deceased, the authorities at the Civil Hospital, Ludhiana, have made no efforts to improve the conditions in the mortuary room. Even the refrigerator, the most essential equipment, is in a non-working condition for the past several months, resulting in the putrefaction of bodies.

350 examined at medical camp

A free medical check-up camp was organised at Rana Clinic and Hospital, Khamano. A team of doctors, including bone specialist Dr HS Kang, brain specialist Dr AK Dhanuka, heart specialist Dr Raghuvir Sharma, laproscopic surgeon Dr Amarpreet Singh and eye specialist Dr Naresh Chauhan, checked about 350 patients.

Residents of ward No.56 are peeved over the opening of another liquor shop on the Malhar road. The road already has five liquor vends. Police personnel were deployed throughout the day to prevent any unsavoury development in the wake of the proposed protests.

3 fire incidents in city

The city witnessed three minor fire accidents at various places today. Officials from the fire department said a small fire broke out at Chief Parliamentary Secretary Harish Rai Dhanda’s farmhouse near Badewal Chungi. The fire fighters controlled the fire within two hours.

20 booked over property dispute

The Sidhwan Bet police has booked 20 persons over a property dispute here yesterday. Two groups, including Balwant Singh of Lohgarh village and Jasbir Singh of Raipur Gujjaran, scuffled at Parjian Bihari Pur village over harvesting of wheat in the land of three acres.

Two held for fraud

The EO wing of the Ludhiana police arrested two persons, identified as Satjeet Singh and Somnath, on the charges of fraud. According to information, the duo has been arrested following four cases registered against them in various police stations of Ludhiana.
