Birth anniversary celebrated:
Senior stage artists of Sparsh Theatre Society Sonu Babbar, Vimal Midha and Ruby Sharma, who formed the panel of judges for the competitions held in the Ik Jot Senior Secondary School, enthralled the gathering with their usual wits against social evils. Today was the fourth day of the week long celebrations in the institution in connection with the birth anniversary of Maharaj Bir Ji. 

Meet targets, tax staff told:
Director-General of Income Tax (Investigations), North West Region, Mandeep Singh Rai, has directed the investigation staff of the department to meet the targets in the current financial year. He was here to review the working and performance of the investigation wing of Amritsar division. He complimented the officers for having almost quadrupled the unaccounted income unearthed during the previous year. 

Special kids win consolation prizes: Mohit and Ankit, students of the DAV Red Cross School for special children, have won consolation prizes in the state-level painting competition for mentally challenged children. It was organised by the Child Welfare Council, Punjab. As many as 70 special children from all over the state schools participated in the competition with “Nature” as theme at Mohali. Both were awarded cash prize, a shoulder bag, a table watch and a colour box each. 

Fire in factory, restaurant:
Goods worth lakhs of rupees were gutted in a fire that broke out in a sports factory in the Basti Nau area late last night. Fire officers said the incident occurred because of short circuit of electricity connections. A fire incident was also reported at Heat 7 restaurant in New Jawahar Nagar. The incident occurred at 12.45 am. Fire engines were immediately pressed into service, fire station officers said.

Rehearsal venue changed:
SDM Payal Neeru Katyla today stated that the venue for the third rehearsal (scheduled on May 10) of the staff put on poll duty in connection with the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections had been changed from Sangam Palace to Mehboob Palace on the Rara Sahib Road at Payal town. All officials have been asked to reach the changed venue at 9 am on Sunday.

Red Cross Day:
The district unit of the Indian Red Cross Society in collaboration with the local Blood Donors Council (BDC) organised a voluntary blood donation camp at BDC Complex here to mark Red Cross Day today. Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg inaugurated the camp where 50 persons, including 40 students of Doaba Polytechnic, Raipur, donated blood, informed Pushp Raj Kalia, secretary of the BDC. 

Charas seized:
The Sujanpur police arrested Mansoor Ahmed of Kupwara (Jammu and Kashmir) here on Thursady and seized 2 kg charas from him. SP Harpreet Singh said on a tip-off, the police laid a naka at the Pathankot-Jammu road. A vehicle was intercepted at the naka and during the search, police found charas which was kept in a bag and was going to be delivered to another person. A case under the NDPS Act had been registered. 



Sarjit Singh, a senior advocate and president of the local Gurdwara committee, has been nominated as the senior vice-president of the panchayati raj cell of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC). In the letter addressed to Sarjit, Kuldip Sharma, working president, HPCC, has expressed the hope that he will not only strengthen the party but will also work vigorously to implement the party policies under the leadership of the party president Sonia Gandhi. Sarjit had announced to join the Congress in the presence of the CM at a press meet at Kaithal a fortnight ago.

HFUCTO to stage protest:
While addressing a press meet at Kurukshetra University Teachers Association (KUTA) office here on Friday, NS Kaushal president, Haryana Federation of University and College Teacher’s Organisations (HFUCTO) and KUTA, said the HFUCTO had decided to intensify its agitation in protest against the non-fulfilment of their demands. The HFUCTO had decided to stage a demonstration in front of the Shiksha Sadan (the office of the commissioner, Higher Education, Haryana) on May 12, 2009. 

Postgraduate exams from May 20:
Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) will conduct the annual examinations of postgraduate (MA, M Com, MSc) classes from May 20. According to the controller of the exams, the MSc (final year) examinations will be held from May 20 to June 20 while the MA/MCom (final year) exams will be held from May 20 to June 29. The PG (previous year) exams will be held from May 20 to June 24.
