Zirakpur/Chandigarh, May 14
Chandigarh-based industrialist AS Bindra was arrested by a team of the economic offence wing (EOW) of the Delhi police from his farmhouse on the Zirakpur-Patiala highway here late this evening. The arrest was made in connection with two cases of cheating and fraud registered at the Connaught Place Police Station, New Delhi, in 2006 and 2007.

Soon after the arrest, Bindra was admitted to GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh, after he complained of uneasiness and chest pain. The medical superintendent on duty at the hospital, Vipin Kaushal, said he had been kept under 24-hour observation in the cardiac care unit after he reported symptoms of Tachy Cardia.

A team of the Delhi police led by SI Rajiv Bhardwaj picked up Bindra in connection with complaints filed by Apple Finance and IndusInd Bank. Incidentally, AS Bindra is the father of Olympic gold medallist, Abhinav Bindra.

The arrest was made after the metropolitan magistrate, Patiala house, Delhi, issued non-bailable warrant against senior Bindra, who was accused of cheating Apple Finance to the tune of Rs 4.31 crore and IndusInd Bank of Rs 5 crore. The industrialist had defaulted in repaying loans and his cheques had bounced. The cheque numbers also did not tally with the account numbers.

The cases were transferred to the EOW of the Delhi police and had been under investigation since then. The police had made the request to the court for an arrest warrant after certain leads and developments in the investigation. Bindra is learnt to have denied the allegations.
