One held with smack:
Acting on a tip-off, the Islamabad police on Monday arrested Vicky of Lamha village in Jalandhar for allegedly possessing 100 gm of smack. A case has been registered under section 22 of the NDPS Act.

Electric shock
: Navpreet Kaur, resident of Jallian village, received an electric shock and burns on her hand when she accidentally touched a loose electric wire hanging from a transformer on Sunday evening. She fell unconscious. Her father Gurpreet Singh and villagers demanded action against the employees of the PSEB who had left the electric wire hanging down without insulated joints.

Summer vacation extended
: Summer vacation of the MSD Senior Secondary Public School and the Lord Rama Public School here has been extended up to July 5. A press release issued by the SSD Mahabir Dal Education Board said the schools would now reopen on July 6 at 7 am.

Dental check-up: A dental check-up camp would be organised on July 2 and 3 at the Adesh Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Barnala road here, said a press release issued here on Monday.

Bodies recovered: Volunteers of an NGO, Sahara Jan Seva, recovered two unidentified bodies and a skeleton from three different places in the district. One of the bodies was found floating at Nathpura head of Sirhind canal. It was identified as that of Rajinder Kaur (65) of Ahmedgarh in district Sangrur. Another body of Gurmeet Singh (30) of village Khemuana was recovered from a canal tributary at Bajakhana road. The skeleton, which was found near the cantonment on Sunday evening, has been identified as that of Lachman Singh (60) of Bhucho Khurd village.

Woman killed in road mishap: One Krishna Devi was killed while her husband Jagan Nath sustained injuries when the scooter they were riding on was hit by a speeding vehicle on Bathinda-Gonaina road here on Monday.

Man held
: Bangali Singh, a resident of Bihar, has been arrested with 3.4 kg ganja from an area falling under the Maqsoodan police station.

Schools closed till July 5
Ludhiana district Magistrate Vikas Garg today passed an order under the Section 144 that the government, private, recognised and non-recognised schools in the district will be closed up to July 5, 2009. He said due to hot weather and unscheduled long power cuts, this order had been passed.

Power Shutdown: Power will be suspended in the following areas due to maintenance- Mullanpur, Pandori, ITBP, Baddowal, Isewal-rural, Isewal-urban, Haweli, Ada Dakha, Bhannor Shahri, Herowal, Baddowal, Jangpur, Mohi, Hissowal, Mailari Sarabha, Sudhar, Mohi, Srabha, Bhanaur Daitwaal, Jassowal, Maholi, Abbuwaal and Issewal Rajowaal Kalana on June 30 from 9 am to 1 pm.

Tarn Taran
: The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the ETT Unemployed Union, Punjab: President - Dildar Singh; senior vice-president - Kuljit Singh Patti; vice-president - Kanwaljit Singh; general secretary - Harpreet Singh; treasurer - Roopam Kaur;  and press secretary - Sarabjit Singh.

Woman molested: Parkash Singh of Thathi Khara village has been booked under sections 354 and 506 of the IPC for molesting a woman of the same village. The police said the victim in her complaint had alleged that Parkash Singh molested her when she was working in  the fields.


Summer vacation extended
: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has ordered that all the government schools, government-aided schools and private schools would remain closed till July 6 in view of prevailing hot weather conditions. A spokesman of the School Education Department, Haryana, said all the District Education Officers and District Elementary Officers in the state have been given instructions for compliance.

Guv for child welfare: Haryana Governor AR Kidwai on Monday urged the activists of the Haryana State Child Welfare Council and other persons interested in child welfare to launch a membership drive for increasing the number of life members. The Governor was presiding over a meeting of the executive committee of the council held at Haryana Raj Bhavan, Chandigarh, here.

Licences cancelled: Vigilance cell of the Food and Supplies Department, Haryana, has cancelled 25 licences and forfeited security of 79 dealers amounting to Rs 46,800 for indulging in various corrupt practices in the distribution of essential commodities among the people during the month of May this year. A spokesman of the department said the cell had cancelled 45 licences and forfeited security of 104 dealers during the period from April 1, 2009 to May 31, 2009.

Body found
: A body of a youth was found in bushes in the Ballabgarh area near here on Monday. The youth has been identified to be a resident of Sihi village near Ballabgarh. Scavengers spotted the decomposed body.

Heatwave claims life:
The heatwave sweeping this region claimed its first victim in the district today when Baldev, a 70-year-old resident of Balu village, died of a heat stroke in the general hospital here. He was admitted to the hospital a couple of days ago after a heat stroke.

Banks told to review security: Alarmed by robbery bids in the state, the district police has issued directions to the banks to install security equipments on their premises. District police chief Shrikant Jadhav held a meeting with representatives of the banks and told them that all the branches should have CCTV cameras with the facility to maintain recordings of at least 30 days and should hold security review meetings from time to time.



Cattle recovered
: The police seized two trucks and recovered 20 cattle being taken to the Kashmir valley on Sunday. The registration numbers of the two trucks are JK02D-5925 and JK14-3097. The police has registered a case and arrested the drivers of both vehicles.

Youth dies in mishap
: Muhammad Taj of Mankote died on the spot after being hit by a Santro car (JK12-3644) in the Mendhar area this evening. The car driver fled from the spot after the accident. A case has been lodged and the police is looking for the accused driver.
