Tubewell meant for 5 villages supplies water to only one

When an overhead reservoir and a tubewell were installed at Tanda Kushal in 2002, residents of Panj Garian, Udhowal Kalan, Jharaudi, Lakhowal Kalan and Tanda Kushal villages were delighted that at least now they would get potable water.

Recarpeting of the Gill road is going unabated at night despite the orders of MC Commissioner GS Ghuman.While Ghuman had given written orders to stop road-metalling with immediate effect the contractors have not complied with the directions and even MC officials have failed to implement these.Road construction in monsoon is not viable because it hits the quality of the road as high temperatures are required for recarpeting.

Two run over by truck
Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 18
Timely action by the police and passersby saved the life of a scooterist who, along with his mother and nephew, was run over by a truck near Lehra village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road this afternoon. However, his mother and nephew died on the spot.

Circulation on the rise in Malwa
Names of students appear on currency notes received by cashier of a public school. Mandi Ahmedgarh, July 18
Counterfeit currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 are turning out to be too real  to eyes.The reports of spurt in circulation of these notes, coupled with lack of knowledge about characteristics of genuine currency, has panicked cash handlers to the extent that they do not hesitate mutilating new notes by writing names of persons tendering them.

Programmes to improve learning at primary level

Punjab will implement specific programmes for improving levels of mathematics and science at primary and upper primary level during the year 2009-10 with independent testing to track the progress, to improve the teacher training programmes and to facilitate remedial teaching.

300 saplings planted
Jagraon, July 18
About 300 saplings were planted today at the Kother Rahalan village near here. Raghubir Singh Toor, president, Jagraon Bar Association, was the chief guest at a simple function held by the panchayat of the village and Baba Jahar Wali Sports Club. About 300 saplings were planted in coordination with the forest department and the Jagraon administration.

The police seized 104 kg poppy husk from a car at Maheshpura village, near here, today. A police team had set up a barricade at Maheshpura bridge in the wee hours when they pulled over an Esteem car. The driver stopped the car and fled the scene. On search, the police found two bags containing poppy husk from the car.
