DTO accused of harassment, had impounded the bus carrying them
Tribune News Service

Fatehgarh Sahib, February 12
Twenty-five girl students of Mata Gujri College, Fatehgarh Sahib, had a harrowing experience last night when the bus they were travelling in was impounded by the Rajpura police on the orders of the District Transport Officer (DTO), Patiala.

The girls of BSc (biotechnology) and MSc (microbiology) accompanied by two lecturers were returning after visiting the Central Potato Research Institute at Shimla as part of an educational tour.

According to Patiala DTO Naresh Garg, the girls were travelling in the bus, belonging to Khatra Transport, with incomplete documents.

Despite lecturers’ plea not to take the bus to the police station, which would further delay their journey, the gunmen of the DTO asked them to sit and wait in an orderly tone.

College principal Dr Jatinderpal Singh Sidhu said there was no point taking girls to the police station at midnight without any fault of theirs.

“We are not against challaning to the bus operator, but taking girls to the police station is not at all acceptable. Such officials are maligning the image of good governance and policing,” alleged the principal.

“We have taken a strong note of the incident and besides writing to the Chief Minister and the Transport Minister, the matter has already been brought into the notice of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar and media advisor of CM Daljit Singh Cheema,” the principal added.

One of the lecturers who witnessed the “highhandedness” said such incidents force parents to think twice before allowing children to go on study tours. He said the officials did not allow them to leave until family members of students approached senior government functionaries.

When contacted, DTO Anil Garg said he was performing his duty, as his papers pertaining to road tax were incomplete. He claimed hat the bus was released within 20 minutes. “Moreover, people must bear with us during such circumstances,” he added.

Fatehgarh Sahib, February 12

The NGO has also brought into their notice about the increasing incidents of bullying by IAS and IPS officers. In his letter, general secretary of the Hindu Organisation Manoj Banda, said besides police officers, politicians with red beacons atop their vehicles, too, bully on roads.

Use of ear piercing sirens has lead to many accidents on busy interactions and national highways, which should be banned for the safety of people.

Instead, number of traffic police officials should be increased on the roads for the smooth flow of traffic.

The four-year-old girl, who was slapped by 1967 batch IAS officer Sujata Das, for a minor scratch on her car is astonishing. It’s high time to take action against such officers, the letter stated. One of the accused juvenile: Court

Chandigarh, February 12
A local court today said that one of the accused in the Prince kidnapping case was a juvenile. Doubts were raised over the age of two accused - Banwari and Surra - when they were produced in the court on February 9 following their arrest in connection with the kidnapping of 19-month-old Prince, son of local vegetable vendor Dinesh of Bapu Dham Colony.

Two other accused, Amarpal, uncle of Prince, and Suresh, were also arrested in the case.

On February 9, the defence counsel claimed that Banwari and Surra were juvenile in the court following which both were remanded in judicial custody for two days and the police was ordered to determine their age.

Today, the defence counsel produced the birth certificate of Banwari and ration card of Surra as proofs to determine the age of both the accused.

The court accepted Banwari’s birth certificate, showing him juvenile, as a proof while the ration card of Surra was not been accepted as a conclusive proof regarding his age.

While Banwari was sent to the Juvenile Home, Surra has been remanded to one-day police custody. Being a juvenile, Banwari’s trial would be shifted to the Juvenile Board. Legal experts said the accused being juvenile, could get regular bail on preferential basis.

Prince was kidnapped from his residence at Bapu Dham Colony around 9 am by the four accused on February 8. Banwari, who had made a ransom call on Dinesh’s phone at around 1.45 pm, was arrested by the police within hours. After that, all the four accused were arrested and the child was recovered. Mohali, February 12
To meet the parking difficulties during the forthcoming World Cup matches at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, the association is looking forward to Chandigarh Transport Undertaking for providing special bus routes.

“We will conduct meeting with the authorities concerned soon,” said PCA’s honorary secretary MP Pandove.

This time the fans as well as the PCA will face more difficulties as the construction work of the sports complex, in front of the stadium, has begun.

Earlier, the space was used as VVIP parking for international events.

“If we have special inter-city routes for the matches, I think many people will opt for such routes,” said Pandove.

He also added that they will provide “Park and Ride” facility from the earmarked parking lots to the stadium and vice versa for the fans free of cost.

“The other big centres like Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai opt for such solutions, as they too face the same difficulty. We will follow their pattern,” said Pandove.

A private transport has already been hired by the association, he added.
