The residents of Chabal town today staged a dharna in front of the local police station and blocked the road traffic for hours against the abduction of a local girl that took place five days back. Congress leaders of the party's district unit participated in the dharna and extended their full support to the protesting residents.

The 22-year-old girl was abducted on April 19 from the Chabal-Khemkaran road when she along with her mother was coming back from Gurdwara Beer Baba Budha Sahib after paying obeisance there.

The police registered a case under Section 366, 34 of the IPC last evening against some unidentified three to four car-borne youths. The protesters alleged that all the accused had been identified from the call details of the girl's cell phone.

Congress MLA from Khadur Sahib Ramanjit Singh Sikki, District president of the Congress Dr Dharamveer Agnihotri, former minister Gurchet Singh Bhullar were among those present during the protest.

The Congress leaders said the police was not serious to resolve the case as some senior leaders of the ruling SAD were shielding the accused.

The residents warned that they would continue to protest till the accused were arrested.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Daljit Singh Dhillon assured the agitators that the accused would be arrested by Thursday morning. They lifted the dharna after the assurance given by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

The police has registered a case against a patwari, Prem Kumar, of Ward No 2, Balachaur, under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC at the city police station for allegedly committing a fraud in a land sale deed and issuing a cheque which bounced. The case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Manpreet Singh Khara of Karyam village.

Manpreet had stated that the accused patwari had also been working as a property agent. The accused had received a sum of Rs 2 lakh from the complainant in a land deal on February 12, 2011 but the deal could did not mature due to some defects. He assured to repay the amount within a week but later started harassment Manpreet by delaying the payment.

Then, a complaint was lodged with the police against him and with the intervention of the village panchayat a compromise was reached on May 19 last year and the errant patwari agreed to pay Rs 50,000 as damages for causing harassment along with the principal amount and issued a cheque of Rs 2.50 lakh. But the cheque issued by the accused was dishonoured by the bank with the remarks "drawer's signature differs". Then, a fresh complaint was made against him, with the addition that he had mischievously and intentionally put his signature in a different way while issuing the cheque.
