Buying at an exhibition
Pushpa Girimaji
Recently,
I bought a saree at an 'exhibition' put up at a hall in the city. When
I opened it at home, I found that the fabric was damaged at two
places. That was the last day of the exhibition and I do not know what
to do as I have no means of tracing the seller, in fact, I do not have
the receipt for the payment of Rs 4,000 that I made. What do I do?
First and foremost, see
if the saree has a tag showing the name of the seller. That will help
you prove (in the absence of a cash receipt) the origin of the saree
or the fact that you bought it at a particular stall in the
exhibition. If you bought a ticket to go to the exhibition hall,
preserve that too, because that will also show that you had gone to
the exhibition. The next step is to trace the organisers of the
exhibition and impress upon them the need for intervening and ensuring
that you get a defect-free replacement or a refund. You can also get
the address and phone number of the seller from them. Either the
organiser or the seller (or both) will have to bear the cost of
mailing the saree, but it is best that you send it through the
organisers. Before doing that, take pictures of the defective saree
and get an acknowledgement from the organisers saying that they have
received the defective piece sold at the exhibition, for replacement
or a refund. If it this does not work out, you can file a complaint
before the consumer court against both the seller and the organiser of
the exhibition.
