 Researchers from the
Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) at Thrissur have discovered a
new fruit growing wild in the Agasthyamala hills of Western Ghats. The
fruit, which locals call, mala njaaval, has been assigned the
botanical name Syzygium sasidharanii. The fruit is yellow; of the size
of a large lemon, with sweet spongy edible portion and a pit in the
middle. The KFRI is recommending this fruit for domestication and
cultivation as orchard fruit.
