Four in police net for beating youths

Mohali, December 27
Four persons have been booked by the police on the charge of beating up two persons in Kharar.

According to the police, Jaspreet Singh, a resident of Ekam Heights, complained that he was sitting in his room, along with his cousin, yesterday. Around 1.30 am, the door bell rang and when he opened the door four persons allegedly attacked him and his cousin. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, from where Jaspreet was referred to a private hospital in Mohali.

The police have registered a case under Sections 323, 427, 452, 506 and 34 of the IPC against Karan Singh, Gurtejpal Singh, Aman and Rajpushvinder Singh, all living in the same colony.

4 students held for sexual harassment

Chandigarh, December 27
The police have arrested four students for sexually harassing a girl and assaulting a policeman in Sector 32 last night.

The accused have been identified as Hemant Saini, Mohit Saini, Satpal Singh, all residents of Sector 32, and Harpreet Singh of Burail. All accused are in their early 20s.

The police said one of the accused was having an affair with the victim. In an inebriated state, the accused went to the victim’s residence and created ruckus and started passing comments. They passed lewd remarks and also misbehaved with the victim’s parents.

As the police were called, the accused assaulted a head constable and bit his hand. The accused also assaulted the police party that was sent to attend the call and one of the additional force was called and the accused were arrested.

A case of obscene acts and songs (section 294), assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty (354), criminal intimidation (506), word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman (509), voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty (332), assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty (353) and acts done by several persons (34) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Sector 34 police station.

Mother-son duo kidnapped, 2 booked

A mother-son duo allegedly went missing late last evening. The victims identified as Ritu Bansal and her four-year-old son Arnav Bansal had come to sector 16 from Zirakpur for some work.

The police have registered a case of kidnapping under Section 365 of the IPC at the Sector 14 police station on the complaint of Ritu’s husband. He has named two persons in the FIR and the police are investigating their role. The accused reside in the neighbourhood of the victims.

It was after the complainant Puneet Bansal looked for Ritu and Arnav for long and did not find them that he approached the police. According to the police officials, the investigations are on and they are taking help of the technical surveillance to locate the victims.

Domestic help kidnapped

Mohali, December 27
A 16-year-old domestic help has allegedly been kidnapped from a house in Phase IV here. According to the police, Om Parkash, father of the girl, complained that his daughter had gone missing from the house of Iqbal Singh. She had been working there for the past two years and looking after the house owner’s child.

He said on December 20 he got a phone call from Iqbal who said that his daughter had left the house without informing anybody.

Om Parkash told the police that he was looking after Iqbal’s farm in Uttarakhand and on getting the phone call he came to Mohali. He, along with Iqbal, searched for the girl but could not find her.

The police have registered a case under Section 363 of the IPC against unidentified persons. — OC

Attempt to take away ATM in Kurali foiled

Some miscreants allegedly attempted to take away an ATM after tying it with a rope to a Tata Safari in Kurali this morning.

According to reports, the thieves struck around 4.50 am at State Bank of Patiala ATM. They entered the ATM with a thick rope and a metal rod and tried to uproot the ATM after breaking the floor and removing the nuts and bolts. The alleged thieves then tied the machine with the thick rope and tied it to the Tata Safari in an attempt to take it away. In the process of removing the ATM from the cabin, the machine got stuck in the door and the window pane broke, which attracted the attention of other people. The people, on the first floor of the building saw the miscreants flee from the spot in the Tata Safari, which bore a Haryana registration number. The vehicle reportedly headed towards Morinda. According to source, there were at least four persons involved in the crime. A bank official said there were around Rs 15 lakh in the ATM which has been saved. The entire crime was picked up by the CCTV cameras installed in the ATM cabin.

Thieves decamp with microwave

Panchkula, December 27
Thieves struck at a house in Sector 11 and decamped with a microwave last night. The police said the miscreants did not take away cash and jewellery. Owner of the house Avinash Aggarwal and his family were not at home at the time of the incident.

“An attempt to steal cooking gas cylinders was made. It seems to be the handiwork of some localite,” said station house officer of the Sector 5 police station Mukesh Kumar. A case has been registered at the Sector 5 police station. — TNS

Sumit steers India to victory

India beat Hong Kong, 2-0, in the final of the Under-14 Asian Junior Cup which concluded at Doha today.

Local CLTA trainee Sumit Pal Singh played a vital role in leading India to victory path. Sumit defeated Ching Lam of Hong Kong, 7-6, 6-2, and gave early lead of 1-0 to the Indian team.

Thereafter, Parikshit Somani of India beat Alan Sou of Hong Kong, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, and helped India to win the coveted championship.

The CLTA congratulated the player for his outstanding performance in the championship.

The director coaching and development, CLTA, Gajendra Singh, said Sumit played an important role in the event, he won nine matches out of the total 10 he played.

On the occasion, he informed that the winning team will get a week’s stay here to watch the ATC events, where all the top players, including Rafael Nadal, are taking part.

“It will give them an opportunity to watch the world’s top players perform, which will in turn help the players improve their game,” said Singh.

It will also give an international-level exposure to the Indian junior players, he said.

India stormed into finals by defeating Indonesia yesterday.

Earlier, in the quarterfinal, India beat Pakistan, 3-0. Sumit Pal defeated Mujahid Khan, 6-1 and 6-3, while pairing with Parikshit Somani in the doubles. The pair defeated Mujahid Khan and Muzammil Murtuza, 6-0 and 7-6 (6).

Sumit played a total of 10 matches in the singles and doubles categories. He performed well and outclassed his rivals in 9 matches.

Harjot aims high and hits bull's eye

Harjot, a native of Ambala, has all reasons to smile after bagging three gold medals in the preliminary rounds of national championship. In his recent he feat bagged three medals in the recently concluded 23rd All India GV Mavalankar Shooting Championship in West Bengal. He is pursuing BA (first year) from DAV College, Sector 10.

He will now represent the city in the upcoming national shooting championship, to be held in Delhi. Harjot won gold medal in the .25 meters junior men's individual event, .32 centre-fire and .22 spots pistol events. Harjot is a registered shooter of the Chandigarh Shooting Association (CSA) and also represents Chandigarh at national level. Earlier, he won laurels in the Punjab Shooting Championship, concluded few months back at the Markfed Shooting Range, Mohali. “I am practicing hard under the supervision of Subhash Rana and will surely bag more laurels in the main national competition. Earlier, I had participated in the air pistol event and this was for the first time I shifted my focus here. I successfully managed to bag three medals. I am looking forward to bag more medals in my shooting career,” said Harjot.

He started aiming the bulls’ eye at the age of 15 years. In off-season, he usually performs his practice at the shooting Range of Delhi. “My college authorities help me a lot and in addition to that my family supports me. Being an expensive game, each one has contributed a lot in my career, so far. I will try to win more medals. When asked about his aim in life, the shooter added, “Playing Olympics is not a child’s play but if all goes fine, I am confident of getting selected for the international competition,” added he.

Ball badminton tourney to begin today

The Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association will be organising the Pandit Mohanlal Memorial Senior State Ball Badminton Championship for men and women.

The ball badminton tournament will be played on December 28 and 29. The matches will be played on the grounds of PML SD Public Senior Secondary School in Sector 32 here.

Action-packed year for PU sports team

The Chandigarh sports’ team of Panjab University (PU) had a pocketful of achievements to boast about this year.

In the All-India Inter-University (AIIU) Sports Tournaments organised during the year, PU won a total of nine AIIU titles, remained runner up in eight AIIU championships and notched third spot in ten AIIU championships.

Giving details of the achievements, PU spokesman said PU team won the All-India

Inter-University (AIIU) titles in basketball (men), yachting (men and women), yoga (men), judo (men and women), baseball (men and women), swimming (men) and kabbadi (women).

The Panjab University (PU) team remained runner up in squash (men), shooting (women), air pistol, baseball (women and men), tae kwon do (men), softball (women), archery (women) and handball (men).

The university notched third place in shooting (men), air pistol, tae kwon do (women), softball (men), fencing (women), archery (men), badminton (men), weight lifting (men), netball (men) and yoga (women).

The PU team remained fourth in the All-India Inter-University (AIIU) championship for shooting (women), air rifle, tennis (men), archery (women) compound round, archery (recurve mix) and korfball (men and women).

PU players also won numbers of individual gold, silver and bronze medals in various All-India Inter-University (AIIU) events held during the year.

It also left a mark in various others sports held in the North Zone Sports events.

Chandigarh Baptist School, GMSSS-26 corner glory in cricket tourney

The Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 47, and Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 26, won their respective league matches in the ongoing SS Bawa Memorial Under-16 Inter-School Cricket Tournament organised by the UT Cricket Association, at the LIC ground in Sector 26 here.

The first match was played between St Soldier School, Sector 28, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26.

Saint Soldier School won the toss and elected to bat first. The team, however, could not perform well and bundled out at 79 runs in 19.1 overs. GMSSS-26 chased the target and managed to achieve the set target in just 8.2 overs on loss of two wickets. Jatinder played a handsome knock of 47 runs that helped the team to achieve the target easily.

GMSSS-26 won the match by 8 wickets. The second match was played between Khalsa School, Sector 26, and Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 47. Khalsa School won the toss and chose to bat first. The team bundled out on 43 runs. Chandigarh Baptist School chased the target in just 3.5 overs on the loss of one wicket. The team won the match by nine wickets.

Government Model High School (GMHS), Sector 40, defeated Shivalik School, Mohali, in 30-over league cricket tournament for boys (U-14) at GMHS-40, here today.

Batting first, GMHS-40 made 187 runs in 30 overs with the help of all-round performance by Abhishek who made 53 runs in 61 balls and also took three wickets for 31 runs.

Satvik (41 runs) and Atul (24 runs) played a vital role in team getting the defending total. Chasing the target, Shivalik School bundled all out at 141 runs.

Sidharth (33 runs), Vikram (22 runs) and Tanuj (20 runs) were the highest scores for the team. Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, will play against KK Cricket Academy and Bharti Viz Academy will play against Shivalik School, Mohali, tomorrow.

Chandigarh Cricket Association make it to final

The Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA) steered into the final of the 1st Under-16 Cricket Tournament organised by Ropar Cricket Association.

The semifinal was held between APJ, Kharar, and CCA. APJ, Kharar, won the toss and decided to bat first. The team, however, bundled out at 70 runs in 28 overs. On the other hand, three wickets haul by Yogesh Aggarwal and Chiranpreet played a vital role in the team’s victory.

The CCA easily achieved the target in eight overs and booked its place in the final. Yogesh Nathani with 53 runs (not out) was the higest scorer for the match.

Angadbir dominates on opening day

On the opening day of the Kundan International Total Tennis Championship, Angadbir trounced Mrinaal, 6-1, to cruise into the next round of the boys, Under-12, category.

In the other matches played in the same bracket, Samarth Suri outclassed Sahil Garg, 6-3, while Sehaj beat Harbir 6-0. In the Under-10 category (boys), Pranav defeated Vanshdeep 6-0, and Jivaj Chawla beat Arehan Puri. Chawla defeated Arehan by a score of 6-0.
