Chennai Super Kings defeated Gujarat Titans by 15 runs on Tuesday, May 23, in the IPL 2023 Qualifier 1 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. MS Dhoni's side last competed in the final in the 2021 season, when they won their fourth title after thrashing Kolkata Knight Riders in Dubai. CSK's return to the summit clash comes after its second-worst IPL season, placing ninth out of the ten teams competing in the 2022 edition.

The triumph in Qualifier 1 was also Chennai Super Kings' first win over the Titans in a total of four games. The teams clashed in the IPL 2023 opening in Ahmedabad on March 31, with the home side winning by five wickets. Meanwhile, CSK’s win marked its fifth win in Qualifier 1 games since the inception of the playoff stages in the 2011 season.

Although CSK have won four titles, they have been ousted five times in IPL finals, three times by Mumbai Indians as well as once each by Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. Besides this, as the coveted franchise approaches yet another monumental milestone, here are three records that will be broken if the MS Dhoni-led side wins the IPL in the 2023 edition.

CSK will join MI with five titles

If Chennai Super Kings win the IPL final on Sunday against Gujarat Titans,  they would join the Mumbai Indians as the side to have claimed five IPL titles. CSK have four IPL titles to their credit, while MI have five. Super Kings' IPL winning years include 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021, while MI's IPL winning years have been 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020. It will also tie MS Dhoni as the most successful captain, alongside MI skipper Rohit Sharma.

MS Dhoni will become the IPL's oldest captain to win IPL

MS Dhoni, CSK's captain supremo, has been an unwavering champion for the franchise. If they go on to win the final against Gujarat Titans, MS Dhoni would become the oldest skipper in IPL history at the age of 41 to win the title. It will also be an enormous turning point for the Indian legend.

CSK's opener Ruturaj Gaikwad on the verge to  create history.

If Ruturaj Gaikwad scores 36 runs or more in the final and CSK bags the trophy, he will become the only player to have amassed 600+ runs in two different title-winning seasons for an IPL franchise. The Chennai batter scored 635 runs in IPL 2021 and has settled on 564* runs for this season.

Meanwhile, the stage is set for the IPL 2023 final as MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) take on Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans in the final on Sunday, May 28.
