Sri Lanka said on Thursday it was trying to “safeguard lives” on a second Iranian vessel near its waters, a day after a US submarine strike sank an Iranian warship off the island’s southern coast, killing 87 people.

Government spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa told parliament that authorities were aware of another Iranian ship within Sri Lanka’s exclusive economic zone and were monitoring the situation. He did not confirm whether the vessel was a military ship but said officials were “doing our utmost to safeguard lives.”

The Iranian warship IRIS Dena was struck about 19 nautical miles off the southern port city of Galle. Sri Lankan rescue teams recovered 32 survivors after responding to an early-morning distress call on Wednesday. Search operations continued Thursday for about 10 sailors still missing. Authorities said the rescued sailors suffered minor injuries and could soon be released from hospital.

Sri Lankan officials also said two refrigerated units were sent from Colombo to store the bodies recovered from the sea.

Iran strongly condemned the attack. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the ship was hit without warning in international waters thousands of miles from the Gulf conflict zone, where the United States and Israel are conducting strikes against Iran.

“The U.S. will bitterly regret the precedent it has set,” Araqchi wrote on X.

U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the strike, saying an American submarine fired a torpedo that sank the vessel.

The IRIS Dena had recently participated in a naval exercise hosted by India in the Bay of Bengal and was returning home when it was attacked.

US submarine didn't issue prior warning to Iranian warship, launched sudden attack: Diplomat

March 5, 2026 9:26 pm

Mumbai: The US submarine did not issue any prior warning and launched a sudden attack, causing the vessel to explode, an Iranian diplomat said on Thursday. Saeid Reza Mosayeb Motlagh, Iran's Consul General in Mumbai, said the ship, 'IRIS Dena', had come to India for a naval exercise and was returning home after the drill when it was attacked. When a ship comes for such exercises, it does not carry significant war ammunition. Whatever limited ammunition it may have had would typically be used during the exercise itself. Therefore, it can be said that this ship was practically without military ammunition, he explained. "Unfortunately, around 100 people, perhaps even more, including our compatriots and brave Iranian soldiers, were martyred. The others were injured, and the necessary arrangements are currently being made to transfer them to Iran," Motlagh said. PTI

Iran pummeled by airstrikes as it launches attacks against Israel, US bases

March 5, 2026 8:00 pm

Dubai: Iran launched a new wave of attacks against Israel, American bases and countries around the region on Thursday, while warning the US would "bitterly regret" torpedoing an Iranian warship. The war has escalated, affecting an additional 14 countries across the Middle East and beyond. On Thursday, Azerbaijan accused Iran of attacking it with drones — though Tehran denied that. A day earlier, the US said it sank an Iranian frigate in the waters off Sri Lanka. All the while, the US and Israel have battered Iran with nationwide strikes. Israeli and American leaders have also suggested that toppling the government was a goal — and Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed when they launched the war on Saturday. But the exact aims and timelines have repeatedly shifted, and the conflict increasingly appeared to be open-ended. AP

Video footage shared by the source showed black smoke rising near the terminal of Nakhchivan International Airport, which is about 10 km (6 miles) from the border with Iran.

US Republicans block measure to halt air campaign

March 5, 2026 1:58 pm

Republican senators in Washington have voted against a motion aimed at stopping the air campaign and requiring that military action be authorized by Congress, leaving President Donald Trump’s power to direct the war largely unbound, as the conflict continues to widen across the Middle East and beyond. The US Senate voted 53 to 47 not to advance the resolution, largely along partylines, with all but one Republican voting against the procedural motion and all but one Democrat supporting it.

Israeli strike kills 3 in southern Lebanon

March 5, 2026 12:24 pm

An overnight Israeli drone strike targeted a vehicle on a coastal highway in southern Lebanon, killing three people, Lebanon's state news agency said. The highway connects the city of Tyre to Naqoura, a border town near Israel. On Wednesday, the Israeli military warned residents to move north of the Litani River, which serves as a key buffer line with villages south of it lying closest to the Israeli border.

Iranian sailors recovering in Sri Lankan hospital after US submarine attack, authorities say

March 5, 2026 11:19 am

Iranian sailors who survived a US submarine strike in the Indian Ocean were recovering at a hospital in the Sri Lankan port city of Galle, authorities said on Thursday, a day after at least 87 were killed in the attack. Authorities at the National Hospital in Galle and Navy sources said 87 bodies were brought in by military rescuers who responded to an early-morning distress call from the IRIS Dena on Wednesday. The 32 rescued sailors were being treated for minor injuries and could be released from hospital on Thursday, authorities said.

Energy supplies in the crosshairs

March 5, 2026 9:30 am

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard issued its most-intense threat yet, saying the strikes against it would result in “the complete destruction of the region’s military and economic infrastructure.” A Maltese-flagged container ship was attacked on Wednesday while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about a fifth of the world’s oil is shipped. The ship was hit by two missiles, sparking a fire, according to Malta’s transport minister, Chris Bonett. Its 24 crew members were rescued. Tanker traffic through the strait has fallen by around 90 per cent compared to prewar levels, shipping tracker MarineTraffic.com said on Wednesday.

Threats expanding across the Middle East

March 5, 2026 9:10 am

Neighbouring countries braced for potential dangers on Thursday, a day after Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard threatened "the complete destruction of the region's military and economic infrastructure." Qatar's Interior Ministry said authorities were evacuating residents near the US Embassy in Doha as a temporary precaution, without providing further details. Fighter jets could be heard overhead Thursday morning in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai. And a new attack off the coast of Kuwait appeared to expand the area where commercial shipping was in danger. Prior attacks since fighting began Saturday have happened in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which about a fifth of the world's oil is shipped.

Explosion reported off tanker near Kuwait, crew safe, UKMTO says

March 5, 2026 8:33 am

A tanker at anchor off Kuwait reported seeing a large explosion on its port side and was taking on water, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said. "There is oil in the water coming from a cargo tank which could have some environmental impact, the vessel has taken on water, there are no fires reported and the crew are safe," it said in an advisory note. Kuwait's interior ministry said in a later statement that the incident occurred outside the country's territorial waters, at least 60 km (37 miles) from Mubarak Al Kabeer port.

Kurdish dissident groups preparing to join fight against Iran with US support

March 5, 2026 8:32 am

Kurdish Iranian dissident groups based in northern Iraq are preparing for a potential cross-border military operation in Iran, and the US has asked Iraqi Kurds to support them, Kurdish officials told The Associated Press. The Kurdish groups are widely seen as the most well-organised segment of the fragmented Iranian opposition and are believed to have thousands of trained fighters. Their entry into the war could pose a significant challenge to the embattled authorities in Tehran and could also risk pulling Iraq further into the conflict.
