In Punjab's Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll, a close contest is being witnessed between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu and Shiromani Akali Dal's Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, according to the initial trends.

Other prominent candidates in the race are Karanbir Singh Burj of the Congress, Mandeep Singh of the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) and Harjit Singh Sandhu of the BJP. A total of 15 candidates are vying for the MLA's post.

The counting of votes for the Tarn Taran bypoll, which began at 8 am here today, will be completed in 16 rounds. The counting centre has been set up at the International College of Nursing, Piddi.

In the polling on Tuesday, a voter turnout of 60.95 per cent was recorded. The Assembly seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.
