Mohali: A 27-year-old youth committed suicide by hanging himself at his PG accommodation in Sector 71 here on Monday night. The victim, Shamsher Dass, a native of Mandi Gobindgarh, was working as a private employee here. A suicide note was recovered from the room in which the victim wrote that nobody should be held responsible for his step. The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC at the Mataur police station. TNS

Laptop stolen from PU hostel 

Chandigarh: A laptop was stolen from a hostel at the  PU. Complainant Nitin Kalotra, a resident of Gurdaspur, reported that his laptop was stolen from Boys’ Hostel No. 3, PU, between November 12 and 18. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station. TNS

Law summit

Chandigarh: Clat Possible, a coaching institute, organised the National Law School Awareness Summit-2019 at a city hotel here on Tuesday. More than 700 students from city schools attended the summit. Dr Surabhi Modi Sahai, managing director, Clat Possible, Mohd Asadullah, founder, CLAT Gyan, advocate Angel Sharma and advocate Anhad Singh Miglani were part of the event. Panel members told the participants that career options were far more varied than just litigations and court fights or notary works. 

Talk on drug menace

Chandigarh: The Department of Zoology of SD College, Sector 32, organised a lecture on ‘Substance Abuse’. Manish, team leader of the Technical Support Unit at the National AIDS Control Organisation,was the resource person.

ATAL workshop

Chandigarh:  The University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), Panjab  University, will host a week-long AICTE Training and Learning (ATAL)  workshop on 3-D printing and design from November 25 with an objective  to empower faculty and provide them with training in technology for 3-D  printing and design. The AICTE-sponsored workshop will comprise sessions by domain experts on various topics. TNS

Training programme 

Mohali: The National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) has been conducting a two-week intensive training programme on ‘Pharmaceutical quality by design: a risk based approach’. As per the NIPER authorities, the programme, being sponsored by the Ministry of External Affairs under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC), witnesses 24 participants from 21 ITEC countries, including Sri Lanka, Egypt, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Sudan, Tanzania, Syria, Thailand, Cote D’ Ivoire, Guyana, Oman, Iran and Iraq. Participants included registered pharmacist, quality control chemist and drug regulators. TNS

Chief Engineer inspects colony

Chandigarh: MC Chief Engineer Shailender Singh on Tuesday inspected the rehabilitation colony, Sector 49. He was accompanied by area councillor Heera Negi and other MC officials. They took the stock of the problems in the area and the ongoing works. The Chief Engineer directed the officials concerned to clear the blocked sewer lines and repair the faulty street lights in the area. TNS

Chandigarh: The city Congress on Tuesday paid tributes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birth anniversary at the Congress Bhawan in Sector 35 here. Illegal mining: One more held

Ambala: The police have arrested Kartar Sinhg of Shahzadpur near here in a case of illegal mining, officials said. Four other suspects involved in the case had already been arrested. According to the police, Ambala assistant mining officer Sunil Kumar had reported to the police on April 5 that the suspect had been doing illegal mining on the banks of the Begna river in Rajouli village. He was sent to 14-day judicial remand by a local court. TNS

2 groups clash, five injured

Dera Bassi: Five persons sustained minor injuries after members of two families of Dera Bassi entered into arguments triggering clash. The police said the two groups reportedly clashed over old enmity. Investigations are underway, they added. OC

One arrested for fraud

Ambala: The police have arrested Suresh Kumar, alias Kala, of Shahzadpur near here in a case of fraud, the officials said. On September 1, Mukesh Kumar of Mullana had reported to the police that the suspect had committed a fraud with him by giving a forged cheque against the payment for cement and iron purchased on August 8. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him to four-day police custody. TNS

Nat’l Integration Day celebrated

Patiala: National Integration Day was celebrated at the ongoing combined annual training camp of NCC at the Army area Patiala Cantt. A lecture was delivered by Jaspreet Kaur, a cadet of Model School, Punjabi University, Patiala. She said the day signified that even though they all belonged to diverse religions, regions, castes and speak different languages, they should always feel that they all were one. TNS

Two SHOs shifted

Dera Bassi: The SHOs of two police stations in the Dera Bassi Sub-Division were transferred by Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal here on Tuesday. As per the orders, Inspector Gurwant Singh, SHO, Dera Bassi, and Gurcharan Singh, SHO, Zirakpur, have been transferred. Inspector Sarabjit Singh was appointed new SHO of Dera Bassi. Meanwhile, Gurwant Singh has been appointed the new SHO of the Zirakpur police station. OC

‘Apex court’s order flouted’

Panchkula: The All India Ambedkar Mahasabha, Haryana, on Tuesday addressed a press conference, questioning the recruitment process of Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC). Addressing the press conference, Rakesh Bahadur, working president of the All India Ambedkar Mahasabha further said Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar's zero tolerance policy has gone for a toss as the government was openly flouting the apex court's order. He said, “The SC in its earlier order had made it clear that the interview of SC candidates should be held along with general category students. But for a recent recruitment by HCS, SC students were asked to appear for interview after general category students.” TNS

Injured man dies at PGI

Kharar: Jagjeet Singh, (29) a resident of Kanoran village, Dusharna Colony, Kurali, who was seriously injured on the Kharar-Kurali road near Rayat and Bahra College, died in PGI on Monday. The Kharar Sadar Police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. As per statement recorded by cousin of the deceased, he was working as a private driver in Kharar and was returning to Kurali on November 14 in the evening on his motorcycle. He, along with his motorcycle, was found lying near the divider on the road. He was taken to the Civil Hospital, Kurali, from where he was referred to the PGI, where he died. TNS

Cartons of illicit liquor seized

Mohali: The local police recovered 40 cartons of illicit liquor from a car at a naka laid near the PCL Chowk here today. According to the police, a Tata Zest car was coming from the Chandigarh side. On checking, 40 cartons of illicit liquor were recovered. The liquor was meant for sale in Chandigarh only. The person, driving the car, managed to flee from the spot. “We have impounded the vehicle and seized the liquor after registering a case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of Excise Act at the Phase 1 police station, here,” said the police.
