Jaskirat stuns Sukhmani, storms into semifinals

CHANDIGARH: Seventh seed Jaskirat Kaur stunned top seed Sukhmani Sahota in straight sets to move into the girls’ U-18 semifinals in the CLTA-AITA Championship Series (CS-7) Tennis Tournament here on Wednesday.

Seventh seed Jaskirat Kaur stunned top seed Sukhmani Sahota in straight sets to move into the girls’ U-18 semifinals in the CLTA-AITA Championship Series (CS-7) Tennis Tournament here on Wednesday.

Jaskirat prevailed 7-6(2) over Sukhmani in the opening set and pocketed the next 6-0 to stay on course for a place in the final.

In another upset, Sweta Samanta ousted third seed Chahana Budhbhatti. Sweta won 6-1 7-6(3). Hitkamya Singh Narwal, meanwhile, rallied from a set down to pack off sixth seed Radhika Vasudeva.

Hitkamya lost the opening set 2-6, but fought her way back into the match with a 7-6(4) win in the second set. She then clinched the decider 6-3 to stay alive in the competition.

Fourth seed Simran Pritam though had an easy quarterfinal outing as she downed fifth seed Aditi Singh 6-2 6-3. 

Bhupender stays on course

In the boys’ U-18 category, top seed Bhupender Dahiya lived up to his billing as he dispatched Gaurav Kumar 6-1 6-2 to book a spot in the semifinals.

Sixth seed Aryan Thakur overcame fourth seed Sukhpreet Singh Jhoje 6-4 3-6 6-4, while third seed Manveer Singh registered a 6-4 6-2 win over Asav Kumar. Jitin Kumar Chetry downed fifth seed Karan Sandilya 6-3 6-3.

Meanwhile, in the boys’ U-18 doubles semifinals, third seed pair of Chetry and Jhoje ousted top seeds Dahiya and Manveer Singh 6-1 6-3, while second seed duo of Arunava Majumdar and Torus Rawat overcame Aarav Singh Gill and Yuvraj Pandit 7-5 2-6 10-6 victory.

In the girls’ U-18 doubles competition, top seeds Riya Kaushik and Radhika Vasudeva defeated Amarjot Kaur Bundhel and Sweta Samanta 6-1 6-4 to set up the title clash with Chahana Budhbhatti and Hitkamya Narwal.

The third seed pair stunned second seeds Simran Pritam and Pawandeep Kaur 6-2 6-3 in the last-four contest. The semifinals matches of the singles category and the final of the dubles category will be played on Thursday.
