Cultural, religious events mark 550th Gurpurb celebrations

The district administration organised various events, including a cycle rally, plantation drive, cultural and religious programmes,  as part of the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev here on Sunday.

The cycle rally was flagged off by Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal. Later, he attended events held in various part of the city, including Rose Garden, throughout the day.  Around 1,000 cyclists, including students, youths and elderly, participated in the cycle rally. The rally was organised to encourage people to use bicycle for health benefits and to save the environment.

Manpreet said, “Guru’s teachings are of immense value and great help for the masses. The teachings are relevant today as well.” He appreciated the participation of Bathinda Cycling Group members. Deputy Commissioner B Srinivasan was also present during the cycle rally. He also attended the function organised at Rose Garden.

Later, a plantation drive was organised at Rose Garden.  A group of children from Deaf and Dumb School, Children Home, elderly from Senior Citizen Home and inmates of Lepers Colony (Kusht Ashram) planted saplings along with the Finance Minister, senior leaders and district administration officials.

Special care were given by the district administration and MC Commissioner to four infants who were brought from Anant Ashram (Nathana) to Rose Garden. These infants were recently found in the Panghura on Goniana Road near Deaf and Dumb School. Their names were also mentioned in front of the saplings, which were planted on Sunday. In the evening, the Finance Minister gave away certificates to the children participated in a painting competition.
