Panic spread in the Phase 3B2 market when a youth shot at least six fires in the air on Friday evening.

The police have arrested the suspect, identified as Jasveer Singh (28), a resident of Ambala, Haryana. During interrogation, the suspect claimed that he went to the market along with his family when some youths passed some lewd comments. In a fit of rage, he fired shots in the air with a licensed .32 bore revolver.

The incident took place in the parking lot of the market. Inspector Rajiv Kumar, SHO, Mataur police station, said Jasveer fled in his Mercedes car after firing shots. “Some onlookers informed us about the incident,” he said.

The cop said they identified the car after scrutinisng the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the area. He claimed that the suspect was in inebriated condition when he fired the shots. “The revolver was licensed in the name of the suspect’s father,” the SHO said, adding that Jasveer had no criminal history. “Jasveer used to work as a farmer and was currently living in Mohali. He also owns a club in Sector 26, Chandigarh,” said Rajiv Kumar. 

A case under Sections 25-54-59 of the Arms Act and 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC has been registered against Jasveer Singh at the Mataur police station. The police have also impounded his car.  The suspect was produced in a local court today. He has been sent to judicial custody.
