Sanpreet of PAU wins gold in 5,000-metre walk

LUDHIANA: Sanpreet Singh of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, annexed the first gold medal for hosts PAU, whereas participants from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University (CCSHAH), Hissar, dominated the track events, winning four gold medals on the penultimate day of ongoing 19th All-India Inter-Agricultural Universities Games here on Friday.

Sanpreet Singh of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, annexed the first gold medal for hosts PAU, whereas participants from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agriculture University (CCSHAH), Hissar, dominated the track events, winning four gold medals on the penultimate day of ongoing 19th All-India Inter-Agricultural Universities Games here on Friday.

In 5,000-metre walk, Sanpreet Singh got the better of his immediate opponents to clinch gold medal while V Harish of Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU), Bidar, secured the second position and Akashdeep from Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Hissar, finished at the third place.

Students of the CCSHAU, Hissar, stamped their class in athletic events, wrapping up four titles with Rakesh Kumar and Arushi fetching up top honours in the 800-metre race in the men and women sections, respectively.

Other two titles for the CCSHAU, Hissar, were bagged by Anmol in the 400-metre race and Rakesh Kumar in the 1,500-metre race in the men’s section.

In badminton (men), teams from the PAU, Ludhiana, along with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore; PV Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University, Hyderabad; Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Chennai; DUVAS University, Mathura; Sam Higginbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Sciences, Allahabad; Central Agricultural University, Imphal; and Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University, Tirupati, registered victories to enter the quarter-finals.

Teams from UAHS-Shivamonga, MPKV-Rahuri, SVVU, Tirupati and JAU-Junagarh qualified for the semi-finals in table tennis in the women’s section while those from the UAS-Dharwad, CAU-Imphal, GADVASU-Ludhiana and JAU-Junagarh secured berths in the last four stages in the men’s section.

100-m hurdles (men): 1st Chetan Kumar from IARI, New Delhi, 2nd Arshdeep Singh from PAU, and 3rd Aijay Kumar MJ from UAS, Raichur.

800-m race (men): 1st Rakesh Kumar from CCSHAU, Hissar.

800-m race (women): 1st Arushi from CCSHAU, Hissar, 2nd Mehakpreet Kaur Randhawa from PAU, Ludhiana and 3rd Sangale Shilpa Balasaheb from MPKV, Rahuri.

400-m race (women): 1st Sangale Shilpa Balasaheb from MPKV, 2nd Divya S from UAHS, Shivamonga and 3rd Sudesh from CCSHAU, Hissar.

400-m race (men): 1st Anmol from CCSHAU, Hissar, 2nd Yugvinder from CCSHAU, and 3rd Suresh from UAS, Raichur.

1,500-m race (men): 1st Rakesh Kumar from CCSHAU, Hissar; 2nd Aavhad Ram from VRNMKV, Parbhani and 3rd Anand from CCSHAU, Hissar.

5,000-m walk (men): 1st Sanpreet Singh from PAU, 2nd V Harish from KVAFSU, Bidar and 3rd Akashdeep from LUVAS, Hissar.
