Basiran alias Munni Begum (62), known as the ‘mother of crime’ and among the top five dreaded woman criminals in Delhi, has been arrested from Sangam Vihar, one of India’s biggest slums. A ‘proclaimed offender’, she was wanted in a murder case and had been evading arrest for the last eight months, DCP Romil Banniya (South), said.

Munni and her husband came to Delhi in the early Eighties. Munni motivated her eight sons — Wakil, Shakil, Shamim, Salman, Faizal, Sunny, Rahul and a minor (name withheld) — to take to crime. She also exercised control over government borewells in Sangam Vihar, which has a population of more than five lakh, and allegedly ran a water supply mafia. She and her sons, booked in 113 cases, are accused of bootlegging, murder, robbery, contract killing and snatching.
