Staff and students of MLU DAV College, Phagwara, observed ‘World Tsunami Awareness Day’ on Tuesday. PowerPoint presentation was presented by teachers showing the causes, effects and precautionary measures related to tsunami. Speeches were delivered by students and charts were prepared on the topic of the day.

The students asked questions about the ‘tsunami’. Principal Dr Kiranjeet Randhawa told the students that tsunami is a series of wave caused by a large, sudden disturbance of the sea. Undersea earthquake is the most common cause but landslides, volcanic activity, certain types of weather and meteorites can also cause tsunamis. She further added that most tsunami waves are less than 10 feet high. In extreme cases, it can exceed 100 feet. Large tsunamis can flood more than a mile in land. The first wave may not be the largest or most damaging and the danger may last for hours or days. This disaster can happen any time, any season and during any weather.

The principal also told the students about types of tsunami warnings. She said these can be of two types: official and natural. She acquainted the students with the precautionary measures if they witness such warnings. Stay out of the water and away from the beaches and waterways. Get more information from radio, television, internet, social media sites and mobile phones. If officials ask you to evacuate, move quickly to a safe place, she added.

In case of an earthquake, protect yourself. Each time the earth shakes, drop, cover and hold on. Take immediate action, do not wait for an official warning. Dr Randhawa further stated that after a tsunami one should stay out of the tsunami hazard zone until officials confirm about the normalcy. Staff and students thanked the principal for updating them with the concealed facts about the disaster.
