2,925 enumerators ready for mammoth exercise

The district administration today pulled up its socks for holding Census 2021— one of the biggest administrative exercises in the country — from this year by organising training for officers involved in the process.

Inaugurating a training programme for this mammoth exercise, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Principal Census Officer of the district Varinder Kumar Sharma said today that starting from 1872, when the first Census of the country took place, this was the 16th Census and the 8th Census of the independent India. He said for the first time the Census would be conducted in a digital mode through a specially designed app which would be used on android phones.

The Deputy Commissioner said during this exercise data pertaining to housing, economic activity, migration, urban and rural populace and demography, besides others would be registered by the staff involved in the national exercise. He said houselisting and housing Census would start in the district from May 15 to June 29.

The Deputy Commissioner said under the mammoth exercise, a population of roughly 3 crore would be covered in the state for which 74,000 enumerators had been appointed. He said for undertaking Census in the district, which was having approximately 19 lakh population, 49 charge officers along with 484 supervisors and 2,925 enumerators have been put on task.

Sharma asked the officers to undergo the training dedicatedly for performing this duty efficiently. Assistant Director, Census, Punjab, Madhav Shyam, imparted training to the officers.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh, Sub Divisional Magistrates Amit Kumar, Rahul Sindhu, Dr Sanjiv Sharma, Dr Jai Inder Singh and Dr Vineet Kumar, MC Joint Commissioner Rajiv Verma, Commandant Kulwinder Singh Thiara, District NIC Officer AS Kalsi, Deputy Economic and Census Adviser Sunita Pal, District Incharge, Census Nagendra Yadav were among those other present.
