Amritsar, January 5
Despite the deployment of CRPF personnel in the high-security Amritsar Central Jail, the instances of sneaking prohibited material, including mobile phones, into the prison continue unabated. On Saturday, the jail staff seized three mobile phones from the prison.
According to Gurbachan Singh, Assistant Superintendent, Central Jail, a Samsung mobile phone with a SIM card was found abandoned in room number 4 of barrack number 7.
The staff also seized an iPhone from the bed of inmate Jagmeet Singh, alias Jaggi, of Gurdaspur. The authorities also confiscated a Samsung mobile phone.
The police have registered two separate cases under the Prison Act in this regard. A probe is on as to know how these mobile phones were sneaked into the jail premises, said the police.
On January 1, the jail staff found 20 bundles of cigarettes and two springs of a heater near tower number 2. On December 30, a mobile phone was found abandoned in the prison. The jail authorities seized 20-gm charas on December 27.
In November, a total of 90 CRPF personnel were deployed in various parts of the jail to strengthen the security system.
Despite paramilitary forces, officials failed to check the instances of sneaking prohibited material, including drugs and cellphones, into the high-security jails.
The Union Home Ministry has sanctioned four CRPF companies for Amritsar, Ludhiana, Kapurthala and Bathinda jails.
In the past, jail staff members were found involved in helping inmates sneaking prohibited material into the prison.
