Ambala, December 15

Nearly 70 per cent commuters crossing the Delhi-Amritsar toll plaza did not have FASTags. Long queues were witnessed in the non-FASTag lanes on Sunday. However, the vehicles with FASTags were crossing easily.

While the majority of commuters admitted that they were aware that FASTags had been made mandatory and also knew that they would have to stand in long queue but they are still to get FASTags.

A commuter who was on his way from Delhi to Amritsar with his family said, “It is a good decision as it will save our time. Sometimes, we face inconvenience in the absence of change. But due to some reason, I couldn’t get FASTag. I have asked my son to get it at the earliest.”

Meanwhile, some commuters called it a decision taken in haste. Another commuter said, “There has been a shortage of FASTags. The government must provide FASTags to vehicle owners and then enforce rules.”

To ensure quick movement of traffic, three lanes on each side accepted cash today.

Varun, manager of the toll plaza, said, “There are 13 lanes at this plaza. Currently, three lanes on both sides are accepting cash. Seven lanes have been spared for FASTags users. To ensure that there is not much traffic congestion, cash handler machines have been provided to the employees and one employee has been deployed at each lane from where the vehicles without FASTags are crossing. Two counters have been set up from where the commuters can get FASTags.”
