1 kg of heroin seized, man held

Amritsar, July 30

The local police have seized 1 kg of heroin, which was concealed in an iron bar of a tractor. The bar was hidden under the earth near a tube well across the barbed fencing.

Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested a person, identified as Bikramjit Singh, alias Bikar, a resident of Kakkar Kalan village. He told the police about the heroin. His accomplice Deba, a mechanic, is yet to be arrested.

Amritsar (Rural) SSP Parampal Singh said as per the investigation, the accused and his associate had been in the illegal trade for the past four years.

He said around two and a half years ago, the accused had smuggled 3 kg of heroin, which was sold to a person for Rs7 lakh.

The SSP added that around eight months ago, the accused had found a polythene bag containing 500 gm of heroin from across the fence, which they sold in retail to their friends.

Bikramjit told the police that Deba was in contact with a Pakistan-based smuggler and used to get drugs from him.

The SSP said raids were on to arrest Deba, who was on the run. A case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused at the Lopoke police station. — TNS
