2 undertrials flee; ASI, two others held

An assistant sub-inspector and two others have been arrested by the local police after two notorious criminals, who were lodged in the Amritsar Central Jail, escaped from their custody due to utter negligence here on Friday. The escapees — Harpreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi — have been facing several highway robbery cases across the state.

A police team had taken them to Jalandhar in connection with a case hearing. Instead of taking them to jail, they went to the residence of one of the accused from where they slipped away after dodging the cops. Those arrested have been identified as ASI Karam Singh and Head Constable Resham Singh, both posted with Peshi Cell of Tarn Taran, and Harjit Kaur, wife of Harpreet Singh of Rishi Vihar, Majitha road. Head Constable Sukhwinder Singh has also been booked. Police authorities said that during investigation, it was found that Harjit Kaur was involved in their escape as she was in contact with the accused throughout their escape process. Sections 222, 223, 224, 225-A and 120-B of the IPC have been slapped.

Gurdayal Singh, in charge of the Peshi Cell, Tarn Taran, said the cops were on duty to take Harpreet and Gurpreet to a Jalandhar Sessions Court for hearing in a Jeep. Resham Singh took them in their private vehicle to Jalandhar for having lunch. He said after hearing, they took the accused to the residence of Harpreet Singh at Rishi Vihar from where they slipped away in connivance with Harjit Kaur.

Police authorities said raids were on to their possible hideouts to nab them. The accused cops have been placed under suspension after the registration of a case.

Negligence

The police team, which accompanied the undertrials to Jalandhar for a case hearing, took them to house of one of them after the court heard their case. The undertrials dodged the cops and fled away. ASI Karam Singh, Head Constable Resham Singh, and Harjit Kaur, wife of an undertrial, have been arrested.
