3 held with 10 snatched mobile phones
The city police have arrested three individuals involved in cellphone snatchings. The police recovered 10 snatched mobile phones and a motorcycle without registration number plate from the accused today.
The arrested accused were identified as Jatinder Singh, alias Bau (27). a resident of Chatwind village, Davinder Singh, alias Chiri (31), a resident of Wadala Gogara in the Jandiala area and Lali (39), a resident of Verpal village in Amritsar.
Jatinder Singh and Davinder Singh were apprehended on March 7, while Lali was arrested on March 9. The breakthrough came when a police team led by ASI Lakhwinderpal Singh, was on patrol duty near Company Bagh, spotted two young men standing beside a motorcycle without number plate. Upon seeing the police, they attempted to flee, but were chased and nabbed by officials. Upon questioning, they were identified as Jatinder Singh and Davinder Singh. Their search led to the recovery of a Samsung mobile phone and a Realme mobile phone from Jatinder Singh, while two mobiles were recovered from Davinder Singh.
During interrogation, the suspects confessed to have snatched mobile phones from people across various locations in the city. They were going sell cellphones. Based on their statements, the police arrested their accomplice, Lali, on March 9. In all, 10 snatched mobile phones were recovered from the accused. The accused admitted their involvement in snatchings in different areas of the city, including bus stands, railway station, Majitha Road, Sultanwind Road, Chatwind, and Manawala.
The police are investigating to identify associates of the accused involved in the crime. The accused are already facing criminal cases.
“The arrests were made as part of a special operation launched by the Civil Lines police under the directives of Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar to curb robberies and other serious crimes in the city. A case has been registered at under Sections 304(2) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in this connection,” said Gurpreet Singh, Station House Officer (SHO), Civil Lines police station.
