Amritsar, September 22
The campaign, initiated by the state government to plant 550 saplings in each village, has resulted in a stupendous success as 72 lakh saplings were planted in nearly 12,000 villages of the state. This was informed by Dr Roshan Sankariya, Secretary, Forests Department.
The move was a mark of respect on the 550th Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev.
He was here today to kick off a drive to plant 1,071 Amaltas plants on the GT road’s stretch between Amritsar and Beas.
He informed that the plants would bloom (producing yellow colour flowers) in the next two to three years. This would offer a beautiful view to visitors of the holy city. He said tree guards would be installed around the saplings to ensure their maintenance.
Elaborating the services being rendered by Hariyali app, he said anybody could download the app and could get saplings from a nearby nursery.
Dr Sankariya appealed to residents of the city to help the government in installing saplings so that the Gurpurb could be celebrated with a service to save the environment.
During the programme, many officials of the Forest Department were also present.
