Two unknown youths robbed a local resident while he was withdrawing cash from an ATM at posh Basant Avenue here on Sunday evening.

The accused decamped with Rs 35,000 from his possession. Though the police procured the CCTV footage, the perpetrators are still out of the cops’ reach. The accused were equipped with a pistol. Several such incidents have taken place in the recent days.

The victim, identified as Narinder Kapoor, is a cloth trader. He informed the police that it was at around 7 pm when he came to the Oriental Bank of Commerce’s ATM at Basant Avenue for cash withdrawal. He said two youths were already there. After withdrewing Rs 20,000, as he was about to leave the cabin, one of them wrestled him to the ground and took out a pistol. Besides snatching Rs 20,000, they frisked him and also took away Rs 15,000 that the victim had kept in his pocket. The entire incident has been captured in the CCTV installed in the ATM booth.

The police have registered a case under Sections 379-B and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against the robbers.

Investigating officer Raj Kumar said CCTV cameras installed on the road revealed that the accused were three in number. One of them was standing outside on a bike waiting for his accomplices. They sped away on the motorcycle after the incident. The CCTV footage procured by the police is not clear and further investigation is under way.

A similar incident took place on July 11 in Ranjit Avenue wherein a BSNL employee, Jagmohan Singh, was looted by robbers who were standing inside the ATM cabin.

Another incident occurred on July 3 when two unknown youths snatched a woman’s purse from inside the ATM cabin in Basant Avenue. She has withdrawn Rs 11,000 from the ATM.

Mukhwinder Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigations), said a special team had been formed to bust the gang. A team of the CIA staff is also working to crack such cases. “It appears that the robbers belong to rural areas. They are new faces in the crime world,” he added.
