Army personnel to run against social evils

Gagandeep Singh, an Army personnel, would on Monday (tomorrow) run a 16-km race in Tarn Taran, making an appeal the people to make the Punjabi language popular and to caution the youth against drug abuse and other social evils. Talking to this correspondent, Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Hadiatpur (Majitha), said he had planned to run in all the 117 Vidhan Sabha constituencies to make people aware of social evils. He has covered as many as 14 constituencies of the Majha region in the last one and a half years. He said as the Punjabi language was the language of our great Gurus to create brotherhood. He said Punjabi youths had made great sacrifices for the country’s freedom and were still committed to maintaining freedom, integrity and sovereignty of the country. A six-foot tall with attractive features, Gagandeep said whenever he came to home on leave, he left home to apprise people of social evils. He said the environment had been polluted and groundwater levels had fallen. Single-use plastic bags should be discarded and there were other such evils, which deserved the attention of the masses. He would start his race from the Amritsar bypass in Tarn Taran and conclude at Chabba and his team members would distribute handbills to residents on the way to raise awareness of social evils.

Govt school sports students felicitated

Students of different government elementary schools, who excelled in the state-level sports competitions, were honoured at a function organised in Government Elementary School at Dadehar Sahib in Tarn Taran district. Jaswinder Singh, Block Elementary Education Officer, Chohla Sahib, presided over the function while Kanwaljit Singh, District Education Officer (Elementary), was the chief guest. Winning students of different games, teachers and representatives of different political, religious, etc, organisations participated in the function in a big number. Addressing a gathering on the occasion, DEO Kanwaljit Singh said as today’s children were the future of the country so society must provide them all possible sports facilities at the village level to help them make outstanding sportspersons. The host school gave a cash prize of Rs 5,000 to the state-level winning students. These state-level games were held in Sangrur recently in which as many as 100 students of the district participated.

Canada-based body donates projectors to 2 schools

The Saif International Awareness Foundation, based in Canada, has donated two projectors to Government Elementary Schools at Mohanpur and Johal Dhun Dhai Wala in the district to enable tiny-tots to compete with the international-level education system. Prabhjit Singh, field coordinator of the foundation, said the organisation had chosen the schools based in a backward area in the first stage. Amandeep Kaur and Sandeep Kaur, head teachers of the Mohanpur and Dhun Dhai Wala schools, respectively, had extended their gratitude to the foundation.
