The final match of the three-day state-level All-Open Hockey Tournament organised by the Sampardai Kar Sewa, Sarhali Sahib, saw Chandigarh 16 Sikh (Army) defeat the local Sant Baba Tara Singh Sports Academy.
As many as 16 hockey teams from across Punjab participated in this tournament, which was dedicated to the memory of kar sewa founder Baba Tara Singh and patriot Baba Gurdit Singh Komagata Maru. The prize distribution ceremony was led by kar sewa chief Baba Sukha Singh. The winning team received a cash prize of Rs 71,000 along with the prestigious trophy, while the runners-up trophy came with an award of Rs 51,000. The Baba Gurdit Singh Komagata Maru and Chohla Sahib teams that were defeated in the semi-finals received a cash prize of Rs 11,000 each. Other participating teams were awarded Rs 1,100 each. District Sports Officer Satwant Kaur, Olympian Balwinder Singh Sammi, Colonel Gurdev Singh Kahlon, principal Sarwan Singh and other dignitaries were present for the ceremony.
The sports fest was held at the Sri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Sarhali, and saw many other events, including slow cycling and 100 and 400 meter races for both boys and girls, 400 meters relay race for boys and long jump for girls. The senior citizens’ and bullock cart races were special attractions.
