Several unknown bootleggers thrashed two employees of a liquor contractor at Mahal village here late on Sunday evening. They were waiting for an excise team to conduct a raid to nab illicit liquor mafia in the area.

The injured have been identified as Kulbir Singh and Dilbagh Singh. They have sustained blunt weapon injures. They were taken to a hospital for treatment. The police have started a probe in this connection.

SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal said the incident came to his knowledge and appropriate action would be taken following an investigation.

Liquor contractor Raj Kumar said he had the allotment of liquor vends in the area. However, a number of people belonging to illicit liquor mafia were active in the area, thereby causing huge losses to him and the state exchequer. He said he had informed about it to excise officials. According to him, his men were waiting for the excise team when the accused bootleggers, armed with blunt weapons, attacked the duo on Sunday.

Police authorities said they scrutinising the footage of CCTVs installed in the area to identify the suspects.
