For many people who walk into my clinic, one question remains the same: “Doctor, do I need braces, or are aligners better?”

After more than 25 years of practising orthodontics in Amritsar, my answer remains simple: The best treatment is not decided by fashion or convenience, but by careful diagnosis based on the patient’s teeth, bite, facial profile and overall balance.

Orthodontic treatment is often viewed as a way to get straight teeth or a beautiful smile. In my experience, its role is far more important. Properly aligned teeth are easier to clean, function better during chewing, and place less strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles.

Correct alignment helps prevent long-term problems such as gum disease, abnormal tooth wear, jaw pain, headaches and even speech difficulties. This is why orthodontic care can benefit children, teenagers and adults alike.

Alongside clinical practice, my years as a teacher and mentor to post-graduate orthodontic students have reinforced one core principle: Successful treatment depends on sound biological knowledge, ethical judgement and detailed planning.

Training young orthodontists has strengthened my belief that precision and long-term stability must always guide patient care. Braces continue to be one of the most reliable treatment options. Today’s braces are smaller, lighter and far more comfortable than those used in the past. They offer excellent control over tooth movement and remain the preferred choice in complex cases such as severe crowding, jaw discrepancies or difficult tooth positions, where predictable and stable results are essential.

At the same time, clear aligner therapy has added an important dimension to orthodontics. These nearly invisible, removable aligners provide comfort and discretion, making it easier for patients to eat normally and maintain oral hygiene. When planned carefully and supervised by a specialist, aligners can successfully treat many orthodontic problems.

I always explain to my patients that braces and aligners are not rivals, but tools with their own benefits, chosen according to individual needs.

One of the most exciting advances in this regard has been digital smile simulation — with modern imaging technology, I can now show patients a preview of their expected smile before treatment begins, improving accuracy and building trust.

Beyond oral health, I have seen how a confident smile transforms lives. Orthodontic care is not just about teeth; it is an investment in confidence, communication and quality of life.
