The National Sub-Junior and Cadet Judo Championship, organised by the Judo Federation of India and the Maharashtra Judo Association, was held at Balewadi Stadium in Prana, Maharashtra, from January 18 to 25. The prestigious event witnessed participation from approximately 1,200 athletes representing 30 states from across the country. Harshvardhan Sharma, a talented judo athlete and student of Woodstock School, Batala, who competed in the 73 kg weight category, won a bronze medal. His triumph has brought immense pride to his state, district, city of Batala, and his school. Harshvardhan’s father, Dinesh Kumar, a national referee for the Judo Federation of India, expressed his joy, describing the moment as a testament to his son’s relentless dedication and hard work. Harshvardhan’s stellar performance has secured him a place in the upcoming Khelo India Youth Games at the national level.

DAV College scores well in IIC ratings

Amritsar: DAV College, Amritsar, has scored 3.5 stars out of 5 in the national-level Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) rating for the session 2023–24. College principal Dr Amardeep Gupta informed that IIC is an innovation cell working under the aegis of Ministry of Education, Government of India. He lauded the efforts of college members of IIC and added that the achievement basically is an outcome of the efforts of the Innovation Council in the college, which constitutes of faculty members, experts and students who collectively undertake multiple activities to promote innovation and entrepreneurship round the year. The council prepares students with skills like critical thinking, design thinking, innovative thought process and entrepreneurial mindset. It conducts various innovation, IPR and entrepreneurship-related activities in a time-bound manner and also identifies and rewards innovations.

annual Basant Rag Darbar

Amritsar: Gurbani Sangeet is a rich tradition and the efforts of university students in organising ‘Basant Rag Darbar’ highlights their commitment to preserving and promoting traditional Gurbani Rag Parampara, said vice-chancellor Prof Karamjeet Singh while interacting with students during the three-day Basant Rag Darbar organised at Sri Gurdwara Sahib, Guru Nanak Dev University. The objective of this Basant Rag Darbar is to celebrate the arrival of spring and honour the ancient tradition of Rag Kirtan. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from university officials, employees and students, all united in devotion to this cultural heritage. University students Amandeep Singh Jhunir, Harsleen Kaur, Bavneet Kaur and Hasandeep Singh remarked on how initiatives like Basant Rag Darbar not only enhance a spiritual connection but also foster community engagement among students. Renowned Raagi Jathas, Bhai Sukhwinder Singh Rababi from Hazuri Ragi, Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib, Bhai Jatinder Singh and Bhai Hasandeep Singh from GNDU’s Music Department, captivated the audience with their renditions of kirtan in Rag Basant over three days.

Young author makes his debut

Amritsar: Vasudev Dhawan, a student of Guru Nanak Dev University College, Chungh, launched his debut book, “Eighteen: Finally Legal (But Still Clueless)”, at his college on Thursday. The book, which falls under the self-help genre, is a motivational guide aimed at students, encouraging them to overcome the fear of failure and confidently pursue success. The occasion was attended by faculty members, students and special guests, who praised the young author’s initiative in guiding today’s youth through the challenges of early adulthood. Dr Gurcharan Singh, college registrar, lauded Vasudev Dhawan’s efforts, calling him an inspiration for students who often struggle with self-doubt and fear of failure. Speaking at the launch, Vasudev Dhawan shared his inspiration behind writing the book. “As students, we often fear making mistakes. We think failure is the end, but in reality, it’s a stepping stone to success. I wrote this book to remind young people that it’s okay to be clueless at eighteen.”

Diploma course gets Accreditation

Jalandhar: Mehr Chand Polytechnic College has been granted accreditation from the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, for its Diploma in Pharmacy programme. This recognition is valid for three years, with the accreditation set to remain in place until June 30, 2027. As a result, students who graduate from this programme will have “NBA-accredited” noted on their certificates. The college principal, Dr Jagroop Singh said the Electrical Engineering programme had already received NBA accreditation, making the college a distinguished institution with two accredited programmes. The principal congratulated Dr Sanjay Bansal, Head of the Pharmacy Department, along with his team and NBA Coordinator Dr Rajeev Bhatia. He said the achievement marks another milestone in the college’s 70-year legacy, coinciding with its Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

Waste segregation system in school

Jalandhar: In a major step towards sustainable waste management, State Public School has introduced an extensive waste segregation system across all classrooms. Each room is now equipped with two separate bins — a blue one for dry waste and a green one for wet waste. This initiative aligns with the goals of the Swachh Bharat Mission, which promotes waste segregation at the source to encourage recycling and reduce landfill usage. Students have been educated on the importance of waste segregation, with the blue bins designated for recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard and plastics, while the green bins are for biodegradable waste such as food scraps and garden trimmings. This simple, colour-coded system makes segregation intuitive and efficient. The school aims to foster responsible waste disposal habits, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. Dr Narotam Singh, the president of the Group of State Public Schools, the vice-president Dr Gagandeep Kaur and the principal, Savina Bahl expressed support for the initiative.

School organises skill courses

Jalandhar: In accordance with CBSE guidelines, Seth Hukam Chand SD Public Senior Secondary School organised various skill courses that included activities such as food preparation, embroidery and handicrafts. Students gained hands-on experience with diverse skills, including learning about ingredients used in cooking and engaging in fireless cooking techniques. In the field of art, students learned various embroidery stitches. Upon completion of these courses, students received skill certificates. The activities were part of CBSE’s bagless learning programme, aimed at enhancing students’ creativity, confidence and life skills in a fun and relaxed environment. The school principal, Priyanka Sharma said such activities help students discover their abilities while fostering essential life skills.
