Ahead of Holi, the Amritsar (city) police is set to constitute special teams to keep hooligans and anti-social elements in check, and ensure peaceful celebrations across the city.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said police officials had been asked to maintain a close vigil, while dedicated teams would be formed under the supervision of senior officers to maintain law and order.
These teams would conduct intensified patrolling in sensitive areas, including marketplaces, residential colonies and major intersections, he added.
Uniformed as well as plain-clothed personnel would be deployed to prevent incidents of harassment, drunken driving, and forced colour smearing, he said, adding that the police had identified vulnerable spots, and instructed station house officers to remain on high alert.
‘Nakas’ (checkpoints) would be set up at key locations, and strict action would be taken against those found creating nuisance under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Bhullar said.
Officials said special focus would be laid on preventing incidents of eve-teasing and reckless driving.
Police teams will remain on standby to respond to emergency calls, and CCTV cameras installed at important junctions will be monitored round the clock. The Police Commissioner has appealed to citizens to celebrate Holi in a peaceful and responsible manner.
