Cong activists hold protest over poor basic amenities
Amritsar, September 2
Senior leaders and former Congress councillors from the Central Assembly Constituency led by former Deputy CM Om Prakash Soni protested against the Amritsar Municipal Corporation at Ranjit Avenue today. The protesters raised slogans against the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party government. The Congress leaders alleged that the municipal corporation (MC) had failed to provide basic amenities to the people and garbage lifting is proper in the city. The sewage system had completely failed and people were forced to drink contaminated water, the protesters alleged.
“There are several areas in which residents are facing shortage of potable water. Streetlights in the city are lying defunct. Despite regular protests, civic body officials have not woken up from deep slumber. The Congress is committed to the people. So, it’s our duty to hold a demonstration and fight for the public issues. Residents are facing these issues as the state government has no vision for development. The incumbent MLAs and leaders of the AAP are novice and failed on every front,” said OP Soni.
Former councillor Vikas Soni, former MLA Jugal Kishore Sharma, former Senior Deputy Mayor Savinder Singh Shinda, Babbi Pahlwan, block presidents and former councillors also participated in the protest.
Meanwhile, during a session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha today, the issue of sanitation in Amritsar city was raised by Ajay Gupta, MLA, Central Assembly constituency. Gupta said the cleanliness in the Central Assembly constituency was in a bad state. More than one lakh devotees come to the Central Assembly constituency every day to pay obeisance at the holy Darbar Sahib, he said. The city’s image was getting spoilt due to heaps of garbage everywhere, he said.
