Contractual staff, including nurses and paramedics, at Government Medical College (GMC) continued with their protest against the state government for the third consecutive day. They have been demanding regularisation of their services.
They said Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh had promised before the Assembly elections that the contractual staff would be regularised within one year of the formation government. Even 16 months after the formation of the government, the promise has not been kept, they rued.
Sarup Kaur, president, Punjab Contractual Nursing and Paramedical Employees Association, said that the government, at a meeting with the association members in May this year, had again promised to implement a few allowances for the employees but to no avail. The protesters boycotted the emergency services, operation theatre services and the intensive care unit (ICU) services.
Meanwhile, Dr Amrit Pal of the Resident Doctors’ Association, Narinder Kaur Buttar of the Regular Nursing Employees’ Association and Narinder Kumar of the Class Four Employees Association have announced to lend support to the protesting employees.
