Amritsar, January 22

A young couple on Tuesday accused the police of thrashing them at Cantonment police station. They said the incident took place on January 19.

Complainant Yadha, a law student at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), has submitted a written complaint to higher police authorities for action against the “errants”. According to her, she, along with her husband Gurnor Singh Baweja, had reported to the police a “misconduct” of her relative. Gurnor, too, is a law student at the GNDU. She mentioned that cops, after thrashing them, snatched their belongings.

She also alleged that no woman cop was present when she was manhandled by male cops at Cantonment police station. “After registering my complaint at 181 helpline, a group of policemen reached the spot. They started hurling abuses and misbehaving with me. They ordered me and my uncle to accompany them to record our statements,” she said.

“Instead of registering a complaint, my husband and I were confined in a room. They also took away his wallet,” she added.

Gurnor Singh Baweja said, “They misbehaved and assaulted my wife as they grabbed her by hair before slapping her. As I protested, they started thrashing me as well. We kept asking them about our fault.

Cantonment SHO Sanjeev Kumar refused to comment.

DCP (Law and order) Amrik Singh Powar said, “I have marked an inquiry to ACP (West) Vishaljit Singh. Things will be cleared after an inquiry.”
