Amritsar, July 25

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Committee submitted a memorandum at the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Thursday demanding that along with tree plantation drives, efforts should be made to ensure their survival.

The committee members stated that burning of saplings along with crop residue by farmers and grazing of animals on green belts alongside the roads are a major reason why saplings get destroyed.

The memorandum states that the administration should penalise those who damage the saplings. This year, the administration is planting 10 lakh saplings in the district this season but even if it manages to save half of these, green cover can be increased, they said.

The committee alleged that some factories were discharging waste water using the reverse boring system and demanded action against such units.
