Dug-up roads pose threat to commuters’ lives

It seems that the Municipal Corporation, Public Works Department, Sewerage Board and other government departments engaged in the maintenance of roads are not concern with human lives. 

Many roads, which have been dug out several months ago, have not been repaired yet. 

Residents are worried because in the upcoming foggy days, most of the accidents are reported due to low visibility. 

It becomes risky for commuters to commute on dilapidates roads in fog.

A number of roads, including Majitha Road, Loharka Road and Vallah Road, have been dug up to install sewer pipes, but these have not been repaired so far. 

Digging work has been going on to install gas pipelines on several other roads in the city as well. Construction work is going on the outer ring road to built flyovers. 

Advocate Kuljit Singh, a local resident, said, “The foggy season proves to be risky for commuters. The poor road infrastructure claims several lives every year.” 

“Various government agencies often dig up roads without barricading the area. If they put barricades, reflectors are not installed. Many accidents had been reported at the Bus Rapid Transit (BRTS) track during the foggy session last year,” he added. 

“The government should make proper arrangements to prevent the accidents. The roads should be equipped with the required infrastructure so that residents can commute without any worry during the foggy season,” said Ranjit Singh, a social activist.
