An elderly man was brutally thrashed by several persons after he opposed them for opening of an additional door in the street in Chawinda Devi village falling under the Kathunangal police station here last evening.
The victim, identified as Rattan Lal (70), succumbed to his injuries on his way to a hospital.
The Kathunangal police have registered a murder case against nine persons in this regard. The suspects have been identified as Fateh Singh, Amandeep Kaur, Harjit Singh, Paramjit Singh, Pritam Singh, Dilbagh Singh, Heera Singh, all residents of Chawinda Devi village, Sanjiv Bhaskar of Batala Road here and Vikram of Amritsar bypass. The police also registered a case against seven unidentified persons under Sections 302, 506, 148 and 149 of the IPC at the Kathunangal police station.
Jatinder Kumar, son of the deceased, said he runs a tailor shop in the village. His neighbour Fateh Singh was forcibly opening an additional door in the street in front of his house. He was stitching clothes when he heard loud noise in the street around 5.30 pm yesterday. He went outside and found that the suspects were thrashing his father. They were kicking him after he fell on the road. He tried to get his father freed from their clutches, but to no avail.
Jatinder said he raised an alarm following which people rushed to save them. On seeing people, the suspects fled away leaving their car bearing registration number PB02CL9152 on the spot. He rushed his father to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Sub-Inspector Jaswinder Singh said raids were on to nab the suspects, while the body was handed over to the family members after post-mortem examination.
