Members of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), along with various farmer unions and social organisations, staged a protest at the DC office on Friday in support of journalists, and against the state government.

A large gathering was witnessed as people from across the Majha region assembled to express solidarity with the media fraternity.

Protesters demanded the immediate withdrawal of cases registered against journalists, alleging that attempts were being made to suppress independent voices. Speakers strongly criticised the government, stating that targeting journalists for their work was an attack on democracy and freedom of expression.

Demonstrators also raised the issue of the Gurdaspur encounter case, and called for a fair and impartial probe into the matter. They said transparency and accountability were essential to ensuring justice, and maintaining

public trust in institutions.

Addressing the gathering, KMSC leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said journalists played a crucial role in highlighting the issues faced by farmers, labourers, and the common people.

“If the voice of the media is silenced through intimidation and false cases, it will weaken democracy. We stand firmly with journalists and demand that the cases against them be withdrawn immediately,” he said.

Pandher warned that, if the government failed to address the protesters’ demands, the agitation would be intensified in future.

He said the protest was not merely about individual journalists, but about safeguarding democratic rights and ensuring that truth was not stifled.

The protest concluded peacefully, with organisers announcing that a memorandum outlining their demands would be submitted to the authorities concerned.
