Tarn Taran: Farmers stage protest, accuse govt of trying to appease US through trade deal

Farmer organisations affiliated to the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-political) staged a protest at the main gate of the District Administrative Complex (DAC) here on Tuesday. It was held under the leadership of Sucha Singh Ladhu, Sahib Singh Sabra, Sukhwant Singh Dubli and Karaj Singh Ghariala.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (Khosa) leader Pargat Singh Paringari addressed the protesters and said that the government of the country was trying to appease American imperialism by abandoning the interests of the Indian farmers.
He said that the country’s farmers are not ready to accept duty-free trade, Electricity Amendment Bill, Seed Act etc., under the agreement made with the US. He said that the country’s farmers have understood the tactics of the Union Government and will not accept any agreement made against their interests. He said that the farmers will not tolerate chip (pre-paid) meters.
The protesters burned effigies of US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. On the occasion, Harjit Singh Johal, Karaj Singh Varhian, Mukhtar Singh Talwandi, Rajveer Singh and Master Sukhjinder Singh also addressed the protesters.
