Five held for thefts, snatchings

AMRITSAR: The police claimed of having solved more than a dozen cases of theft and snatching with the arrest of five persons here on Tuesday. The police have recovered motorcycles, cars, a pistol and some other valuables from the accused.

The police claimed of having solved more than a dozen cases of theft and snatching with the arrest of five persons here on Tuesday. 

The police have recovered motorcycles, cars, a pistol and some other valuables from the accused. 

The accused have been identified as Malkeet Singh alias Rubal, Sarbjit Singh alias Sonu, Harpreet Singh alias Happy, Lovepreet Singh alias Love and Balwinder Singh alias Chiri. 

In a press conference, Police Commissioner SS Srivastava said the accused had recently snatched a handbag from a woman at Pawan Nagar on Batala Road. 

The incident had been recorded in a CCTV camera. The police identified the accused and launched a manhunt. 

Police officials claimed that following a tip-off, inspector Sukhwinder Singh from the crime investigating agency nabbed Malkeet Singh and Sarbjit Singh. 

The police recovered a stole motorcycle, sharp-edged weapons and mobile phones from the spot. 

During interrogation, the police recovered four more mobile phones from them. They have confessed to snatchings at Ranjit Avenue, Pandori village and Kachari road. 

They also confessed to the involvement of their gang member Harpreet Singh in several cases. 

The police took Harpreet Singh Happy on production warrant and interrogated. Police officials claimed that further investigation was on and they would get more clues during interrogation. 

During a raid, the police also arrested Lovepreet Singh Love while his two accomplices managed to escape. The accused had robbed Rs 60,000 from a person at gunpoint at Majitha Road last week. 

The incident was recorded in CCTV cameras and the police released it in the media. 

On a tip-off the police chased their car on Majitha Road. Two accused Bikramjit Singh Bikka and Sandip Singh alias Sadhu managed to flee, leaving the car on the spot while Lovepreet Singh was arrested. 

The police recovered a car, a motorcycle, two pistols, mobile phones and Rs 9,000 from him. The gang was involved in several crime incidents.

Similarly, the Chheharta police have arrested Balwinder Singh alias Chiri and recovered a car and Rs 8 lakh. The accused is an alleged drug smuggler and collected the money after sale of narcotics. 

The Police have registered a case under the NDPS Act.
