Foreign cigarettes worth Rs 4 lakh seized from Amritsar airport

The Customs Department seized imported cigarettes at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport here on Tuesday. The cigarettes were recovered from a passenger from Sharjah.
Customs officials took the cigarettes into their custody and started questioning the passenger. According to information received from sources in the Customs Department, the passenger had landed at the Amritsar airport from Sharjah. When his luggage was checked, 24,800 cigarettes were recovered from it. The market value of the cigarettes was estimated to be around ~4.21 lakh.
The smuggled cigarettes have been seized under relevant provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under way.
This is the second time in a month that imported cigarettes were seized from the Amritsar airport. On July 30, officials of the Customs Department seized 60,000 sticks of cigarettes worth over ~10 lakh from two passengers at the airport. — TNS
