Terming the frosty weather good for the wheat crop, the Agriculture Department has asked farmers to keep a vigil for the signs of yellow rust during the next few weeks. Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Dalbir Singh Chhina said farmers should look for yellow powdery substance on leaves and contact their field officers in case of any problem.
Dr Chhina said the department is providing medicines to kill rodents in wheat fields as their attacks in fields sown with happy seeders have been reported prominently from many pockets. The district has 1.88 lakh hectare of area under wheat crop out of which 26,200 hectare area has been sown with zero till drill and happy seeder.
Meanwhile, the department has also sought applications for mechanical paddy translators which it intends to provide to farmers at 50 per cent subsidy.
“Farmers can submit their demands to their block agriculture offices or at the main office. Transplantation with machines helps in checking the labour shortage which is faced during transplanting season,” he added. — TNS
