AMRITSAR: The police have taken notorious gangster Darshan Singh, alias Raja Kanwada, on remand for interrogation in connection with the seizure of heroin from his two brothers recently.

The police have taken notorious gangster Darshan Singh, alias Raja Kanwada, on remand for interrogation in connection with the seizure of heroin from his two brothers recently.

Veer Singh, alias Viru (31), and Gulshan Kumar, alias Prince (22), of New Azad Nagar were caught at a police checkpoint on Wednesday. As much as 275 gm of heroin was seized from them.

Investigation revealed that the drug racket was being run from inside the Amritsar Central Jail. They were getting instructions from Darshan Singh, alias Raja Kanwada, member of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang, and his brother Pardeep Kumar, alias Piddu, of Gujjarpura. Both are languishing in jail. Raja Kanwada used to call someone from jail, who used to provide them 1 kg of heroin per month. The contraband was supplied to drug peddlers for sale.

Vavinder Mahajan, in charge, local unit of the crime investigating agency (CIA) staff, revealed that the heroin belonged to notorious gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria. They used to supply the same to their clients. He had apprised the police that a number of mobile phones were active in the jail. “If an inmate gets out of bail or released from jail, he hands over the mobile to his accomplices in the jail. They used social networking applications to contact with their accomplices,” Mahajan said. Kanwada will be produced in the court on Monday, he added.

2 caught consuming drugs

Meanwhile, in another incident, the Sadar police arrested Ranbir Singh of Batala and Amanpreet Singh of Jeeto Sarja villag in Gurdaspur while they were consuming drugs in their car in Fatehgarh Churian road area. During interrogation, they revealed that they got the heroin with the help of Sagar Singh of Gawan Mandi. Sagar is currently lodged in jail. He asked his accomplice to provide the contraband to them. They used to contact him through WhatsApp call.

Rajwinder Kaur, SHO, Sadar police station, said Sagar has been arrested and a mobile phone has been seized. She said more recoveries and arrests were likely to be made during his interrogation.

The Sadar police also cracked a snatching case. According to the police, they arrested Sawan Singh of 88-feet road area. An I-phone was recovered from his possession. More revelations are likely to surface during further interrogation.
